Good Practice Podcast - Building an Online Learning Community for L&D

Good Practice Podcast this week gave myself and Mike Collins the opportunity to meet up with Owen Ferguson and Ross Garner, both from Good Practice, to talk about building an online learning community for learning and development. The DPG Community has been a cornerstone of our learning experience for several thousand learners over the past four years, so it was nice to reflect on this and what can be learned when setting up communities of practice in our organisations.

We also looked at the news surrounding the press discussions on Facebook's moderation guidelines and joined in on the regular what have you learned this week feature.

Please do share your thoughts on what we discussed using the comments on this page. Do take time to check out more episodes of the regular Good Practice podcast which is available on IOS and Android too. Find out more here.

Here's this week's episode. Once you've had a listen (or whilst you're listening) I'm interested to hear your responses to the questions below....

  • What communities of practice already / could exist in your organisation?
  • What common purpose do they have?
  • What platforms do you use?
  • What's the role of L&D and others in the community?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    • What common purpose do they have?
      • Sharing learning, user-generated content and engagement
    • What platforms do you use?
      • Fuse, Yammer
    • What's the role of L&D and others in the community?
      • Curators, Regulators, facilitators, administrators
    • Hey Karen,

Thanks loads for your comment on this post, all of which I'm finding fascinating and will probably comment lots over the coming weeks! The reason being, it's an interesting topic and your approach seems pretty awesome there.

For now, I'd love to pick up on the 'user-generated content'. How is this going? What sort of content are people contributing? How many do you see getting involved in this - i.e. what's the uptake and buy-in been like for contributing content.

      Ady

  • Leadership community intranet page and blog pages etc and continued improvement forums but many more could exist given the opportunity.

Discussing current practice, issues and such like that.

I personally don't use them but have uploaded information to them in the past.

L&D are mostly there to facilitate the running of spaces like this.
