Hiya,
Not sure if anyone will be able to help since this may be more of a legal question, however perhaps someone will know where I can get the info if not!
My manager has decided that she wants to bring drugs and alcohol testing into the Company.
Mostly targeting our company car drivers (sales and engineers) and company van drivers who deliver our goods to customers (installations).
She wants to purchase the testing kits, either online or through an external company and test the employees herself.
She wants to know what she would need if she was to become the 'collection officer' or would she need any type of qualifications or skills to do this?
However, I'm slightly worried about some scenarios, A- the Company could be under fire for 'tampering' with samples should they come back positive, and B- is this unfair, since my manager would be seen to be the tester, would anyone test her, the employees may think?
Hopefully all this makes sense!!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Sophie

Hi Sophie
Thanks for posting this is a really interesting topic and one where there are a number of different options. My experience has always invovled utilising an external drug and alcohol testing company, that said the majoirty of businesses I have worked in we have only operated for cause testing as opposed to random.
From a review of some of the alochol and drug testing providers it would appear that there are courses which managers can attend to become a certifieid collecting officer, and also on site testing kits which would provide legally defensible evidence. You will also need to consider chain of custody for the samples taken and also that your contract and policies are amended after appropriate consultation when introducing the above.
My suggestion would be to identify an alcohol and drug testing provider that can provide the level of service which you need for your business and speak with them. They can be really helpful we have recently introduced this for one of our clients and the testing provider we chose reviewed their drug and alcohol policy to ensure that this aligned with the actual testing procedures which the Company operated.
I hope this helps!
Kind regards
Sarah
