I'm relatively fine with arrangements for rules regarding mileage claims for business miles over and above the distance between home and the place of work. I'm querying how everyone handles journeys that are less than the distance between home and the place of work.
As an example - an employee normally drives West for 22 miles to her usual place of work each day. She is not able to claim expenses for this journey. Occasionally she will drive East to another venue that is only 5 miles from home - but is not her usual place of work. Can she claim for this journey? Our finance Director says no, as it is less than the distance she would have travelled had she come to her usual place of work that day.
HMRC guidance is not easy to pick apart, but seems to say that the person may claim for either the distance from home to destination or the distance from workplace to destination - whichever is lesser. That would seem to indicate that the person can indeed claim for the 5 miles return journey, despite it being less than the journey she would normally take.
Seems a bit bonkers to me - so I'm handing it over to you all to give me your thoughts please!

Maybe there is a payroll person out there in the Communtiy who can help.
In my last role any mileage which we claimed we had to deduct the mileage from home to contractual place of work first. As Karen says we were only allowed to claim for additonal cost incurred. I'm not sure on the HMRC guidance it was a unionised environment so was agreed with the TUs.

My understanding is that expenses are to cover additional cost, therefore as the individual is actually gaining by claiming the 5 miles I agree with your Finance Director.
