Hi all,

I would need some help regarding working hours for under  people under 18 years old. The govs website doesn't specify anything for 17 years old and for 16 years old says that they cannot work after 7 pm and its much more restrictive than  ACAS which states that they can work in the evenings depending on the industry after school leaving age (16 years old??) I am bit confused, can somebody help?

Thank you very much in advance

  • Hi Trini

I found this if it helps:

    Young workers

For young workers (those over compulsory school age but under 18) there are more stringent daily and weekly limits. They may not work more than eight hours in any day or 40 hours in any week (Monday to Sunday) (regulation 5A, WTR 1998). There are also no averaging provisions for young workers i.e this maximum hours may not be averaged out over the 17 week reference period. This is in contrast to adult workers, whose working hours are averaged over a 17 week reference period.
The specifics which you refer to are that I am aware that working hours for young workers are also set more locally and are specific to the local authority under whose jurisdiction the young worker would fall these tend to be more prescriptive in terms of actual times when young workers can work as opposed to the WTR which is more high level.
So for example where I live this is Derbyshire Local Authority and as you will see from the link has much more detailed guidance for what hours may or may not be worked and when:

    I hope this helps!
