Young People Forum

Hi All,

We have a number of really successful staff forums (BME, Disability, LGBT, Women's) at my organisation (a Local Authority in Essex). One of the additional ones that we have been toying with as an idea was an apprentice forum which would target the younger members of our workforce, however given the introduction of the levy the idea of a specific forum for apprentices has ended and the focus shifted to just 'young people'.

Before I get cracking to see what the appetite is for this internally I wondered whether any other organisations specifically have a forum for their younger / junior members of staff just starting our in their careers? What's the take up like and what is the main focus?

The target age range is going to be 16-21 (or potentially up to 24) and I want the forums to be themed to tackle specific areas of development and interest for them.

Appreciate any learning or insight anyone might have having achieved or attempted something similar previously?

Thanks,

Mykela

  • Hi Mykela,

This sounds like a great initiative and makes sense to shift it to a young persons forum rather than a specific apprenticeship forum. There are countless forums of this nature in healthcare and other public sector places and I hope someone can share their experience in something similar.

I think the key thing is to establish the focus of the forum, the why, what and how. Then engage with the group themselves and get insight and feedback on what would make it a valuable exercise, I think involving the group from an early stage would increase the chances of success.

I did a quick good search and whilst this is specific to Health Care I think some of the ideas and practice here would apply to any industry or group http://www.byc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/NHS-Youth-Forum-Ti...

Let me know what you think and what you're planning to engage the group

    • Thanks Mike - appreciate the input and will definitely update once we have a plan of action and have addressed the why, what and how. I'm going to engage 2 previous apprentices that are now working in other roles in the organisation to help with the initial launch and engagement.

      • Hi Mykela

This sounds like a really interesting idea.  I did some research and found out that Sainsburys run a young person's Forum, there is an article about this here:

If there are any participants out there who work with Sainsurys perhaps they could share how this works in practice and how this has benefitted the business?

        All the best

        Sarah
