Needing to get back into my IBI report after a long break - I've been struggling to get back into it.

Just googled "help with self motivation" as I'm sure once I get started I'll get back "into the flow". It's just that "getting started" is defying me.

Came across this link.  (24 Surefire ways to get your mojo back by Marelisa)

Most of the points weren't really relevant to my case, but then I got to number 22 and this story:

If your mojo is low because you’re having trouble reaching an important goal, and you’re about to give up, think of the story of the village that was famous for miles around because its rainmakers were successful in making it rain 100% of the time.

The surrounding villages were all amazed at this remarkable success rate, so they each sent a representative to find out what this one village was doing differently than they were. It turns out that the reason for their perfect track-record was simple: their rainmakers wouldn’t stop dancing until it rained.

Follow their lead: whatever your most important goal is, refuse to stop dancing–that is, taking the necessary action to achieve your goal–until you’ve succeeded.

Quite right eh? Stop sighing, getting coffee, flicking between versions, writing lists of what needs doing - just get on with it.(I also read that if you tell someone else you're doing it, you're more likely to do it!)

I want to finish this report and I want to finish it this week. It isn't easy and it is time consuming. Deal with it simbo - yes - sirreee...!

See you all next week - thanks for listening :)

  • Hi Alison

Thanks for posting this - I really enjoyed reading the list. There are some great tips. I found just reading the list quite uplifting. Good luck with the report.

    Martin

    • Thanks Martin, glad you enjoyed the list :)

  • Great read Alison. Love the 24 points and +1 on Mike's point: Great to see you here.

Over the next couple of days, I've got a bit of the written word to craft, some scripts to write and some storyboards to think up that will no doubt require me to think creatively. A bit like report writing as you're crafting those words. So this has got me thinking on environment (where we are writing) and creativity (what we are writing) together.

With that in mind, out of the list of 24; 4 (engage in an activity you enjoy), 21 (get some sun) and 23 (feed your soul and find beautiful places) are things I'm going to have a play with. Who knows what the possibilities are creatively if I can find an environment place to write business stuff that ticks all three - oh, I should mention on a shoe string budget and without taking annual leave!

Report writing involves a lot of creativity. I've also got my thinking cap on environment and creativity over on this one: http://community.dpgplc.co.uk/the-leadership-forum/what-is-the-impa.... Would love to see you there too!

    • Haha Ady, from the points you enjoyed from the list it sounds as though probably need a break - bank holiday coming up soon eh?

I'm going to head over to your post now :)

  • Great to see you back here Alison and thanks for the share!

Really enjoyed the 24 ways and yes some resonated with me more than others. Number 8 has always been something that has worked for me

    8. Set yourself up to have frequent, small wins. Instead of setting huge goals and telling yourself that you’ll succeed once you achieve them, break your goals down into monthly, weekly, and daily goals.

Daily or weekly tasks - small steps to make giant strides :)

Good luck with getting the report done - the end is in sight!

    • That is such good advice Mike, I agree. Unfortunately it's sometimes easier said than done, especially if targets slip and you have to roll them over. You start to feel like a failure - mind you someone said something along the lines of it's how you deal with failure that sorts out the strong from the weak. We do always have choices and it's important to take control and not feel like a victim.

A bit heavy considering all I've got to do is a little report - and all the hard work is done.

Hey it's nearly weekend - hurrah!
