L&D in Public Sector

Hi,

I work for a public sector company & we have just set up an L&D function for the first time.

I wondered if anyone who currently works for a public sector organisation would mind getting in touch to share any best practice or let me come to visit your organisation. I'm particularly interested in an LMS systems you may use & how is L&D set up in your area.  My team come under the commercial area, rather than HR

I previously came from private sector & often get comments like 'we do things differently in the public sector', so thought it would be good to get examples of best practice from other public sector organisations

Mind sets are quite rigid at the moment, with the majority of the workforce being here for 20 -30 years, which means people necessarily see the value in L&D interventions.  Most people agree we need an L&D function and some are looking forward to receiving regular support, but when workshops are arranged, wed have low attendance rates, as work loads are the priority, so any tips would be appreciated

Thank you

  • Hi Paula, I saw the thread here from a link into my blog.

The do things differently attitude is interesting; they're NOT that different and it's often used as an excuse to limit innovation in the sense that everything has to be new, original and bespoke. That means it can be slow and costly to implement anything new.

You'll see best practice cited a lot - look for the accepted practice and you'll be on the way to establishing the lowest common denominator of standard. Once that's been agreed you can then start piloting 1001 different small things to move them onwards and upwards.

More than happy to discuss - best is to email me via my blog.

    • Thanks Andrew, looking for the accepted practice and starting from there is a good idea, I'll certainly give it a try.  I'm just reading through some of your blogs to see if I can get any more ideas!!!

  • Hi Paula, I work for Liverpool City Council and understand the issues you may face.  Up until a year ago the L&D service team were seconded to a partnership organisation set up so we charged the council for all L&D services, this is in the process of changing.  We ran L&D as a more commercial set up and now working back in the Council which is a bit different.

We are currently going through procurement with the intention of replacing our LMS that we currently use for various reasons.  Ive been here 11 years and we used to have an inhouse system which was replaced and its now needing upgrading or replacing.

Happy to have a chat if you think it would useful, just let me know!

    Julie

    • Thanks Julie, sounds like you have certainly faced some of the challenges we are facing now.  How's best to get in touch for a chat? you can contact me at paula.batley@me.com with details

  • Hi Paula

It might be useful to connect with Andrew Jacobs who was at Lambeth Council and now at Lewisham. He has done some very interesting things so definitely worth connecting. He writes a blog here and is on Twitter @andrewjacobsLD

    • Thanks Martin for the advice, I'll get in touch with Andrew

      • You are welcome. I'm sure there are others in the community who can help, so hopefully you'll get some more responses!
