Hi all, I need a little bit of help and where better to come than the DPG forum.
I have been asked to look at a inhouse training and development package to deveolp existing shift leaders and to set something in place to start to develop future shift leaders, we are growing rapidly in the UK and globally, and we need to grow our leaders inline with this global growth if we are to remain exceptional. I kind of know where i want to go with this with modules such as; deveolping personal leadership, defining performance using appraisals and coaching, Planning, Problem solving, decision making, recognizing potential, delegating, communication, effective meetings, CI & celebrating success.
I am certain there must be some brilliant material out there that you guys & girls could share. I dont want to replicate what you have done (unless it is exactly what I need), but i would like to look at what you have done and to build on it.

Any help and/or guidance will be very much approeciated.

  • Hi Darren, how will the material be delivered? Will you be providing it as "e learning" or will you be running workshop type sessions?

Getting the buy in of all the managers whose staff will be receiving the training and to make sure they fully support it as an ongoing development piece, will be important (as they will be providing the opportunities for the future leaders to practice their newly learnt skills and will presumably be coaching the delegates to help them in this) and it would be worthwhile having a session with them to discuss the content, once you know the budget and how you intend to deliver the package (you might need their thoughts on the latter as well.)

We recently delivered a "personal development" training course (ILM recognised) for our future shift managers (currently "stand ins" when their managers are away), using 3 x 2 day workshops led be an external facilitator over the course of 6 weeks. (each workshop 2 weeks apart). On the final afternoon the delegates area managers were invited to come and hear about their work and what they were taking from the course as key learning and what they were going to try to put into practice (group and individual presentations). This was then followed by a 1:1 with their manager, so they could agree between them how to make sure the learning wasn't lost, and how it could be practiced and demonstrated.

The course content was relatively basic, as for some of the delegates it was their first ever exposure to this sort of thing...but it covered motivation, performance management, leadership skills, communication and so on. They did a reflective learning log at the end of each day so they didn't forget what they had picked up and had it as a record. There was a mix of experience in the group which helped as they could all learn from each other.

The delegates really enjoyed the 6 days and rated the course highly on the day's feedback forms. I put that down to the style of the facilitator as he challenged each of them and really worked them hard. The delegates also appreciated that it was external (and recognised by a national body) rather than internal, and I think they looked forward to it more because of that. They were invited to attend (rather than told they had to) but had to commit to doing all 6 days.

There is loads of content on all the topics you have indicated if you look online. You will have to draw from it what suits your course format. I would start with a session along the lines of "what makes a good shift leader?" and have the job description in hand to use as a reference. In the personal development bit I would let them self assess against the JD regarding how confident they feel in delivering against each item, using a rating scale. (for self use only) They can then reconsider it after doing the course and see if they feel more confident on their own personal weaker points. Just a thought. I developed a series of workshops for our staff a couple of years ago (of which the above was part of the opener), to run alongside and support an externally driven course, but due to internal change it was never used!

Very best of luck with developing your package :)
