Very often within L&D teams, we're working in different locations to each other, sometimes even at different times of day. We're also seeing an up-rise in people working from home. There's also the challenge of working with subject matter experts who may not be physically located in the same place or perhaps external working in a totally different organisation.

Technology is however at hand to serve us up some solutions to break down the barriers of working collaboratively in these scenarios.

You might find this article useful that shares 20 of the best tools for online collaboration.

I'm wondering if you use any of them, or maybe others not mentioned, in your organisation. Maybe you are looking to implement something like this in the near future. Or perhaps your attempts to introduce something are being met with resistance; I'm especially interested to hear about that.

Have a look at this article: The 20 best tools for online collaboration.

  • I attended a webinar last night on Lean UX with https://twitter.com/jboogie and it was hosted by the creators of Mural. It's on the list but first time I'd seen it in action...was really useful to see ideas being discussed on the webinar mapped on an interactive whiteboard in real time.

The focus of the list is online collaboration but most seem to be focused on design / creative / web projects but I wonder how much of Lean UX, Designing Thinking and Collaborative practice L&D should be taking in to their design methodologies or do most teams still design in isolation? A question more than a statement.

    • Great to hear Monika.

Wondering who introduced Yammer. Was it you? Communication and collaboration is really important and these are great tools to be using.

How is it all going? You finding everyone is on board and using it? Are some resistant?

      I'm interested to hear more.

        • Hats off to your manager for the introduction and to you too Monika for embracing this.

I'm a fond fan of Slack since we started using it as a team. I love the way we can split different projects and topics into individual channels keeping everything together. We use it a lot to share knowledge, resources, information, insight, solve challenges and have some fun along the way with it too.

In terms of is it working for everyone, from our team's perspective absolutely. In fact, it's become the primary method of communication a lot of the time for us. I'd go as far as to say it's critical given that we're all in different locations in the country. I remember one day when Slack wasn't working for me for an hour or so and I really missed it.

The wider organisation and people from other teams have not YET adopted it as much as I think they should. This is probably because our team that does use Slack is made up of those that are likely to be early adopters, but also other teams tend to work in close proximity. Even when a team is in close proximity, tools like Slack and Yammer do offer huge benefits. I'm not saying we should replace talking to each other face to face when we're in the same office. However, there's lots of mileage in using these tools to keep everything to do with individual work-streams, topics, projects etc in one place. It's interesting to see how our productivity has sky-rocketed using Slack and how we feel better connected to each other and to knowledge.

It might be worth having a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCvitZj1AZo&t=214s. It's from Mike Collins and the place I go to when I'm thinking about introducing new things. What he says about the Gartner Hype cycle and the box that rocks has really stuck with me. Hopefully you keep the momentum going beyond the initial interest. Clearly, both you and your manager are the early adopters.
