We've moved on from the years that the classroom training was the only option for organisations. With the introduction of Virtual Classroom technology, teams that are geographically spread can now meet up online to connect, collaborate and learn. Many organisations are using this as part of their 21st century blended learning approach.

But using Virtual Classrooms isn't just a case of dumping content that was used in the face to face envrionment onto a platform with the hope that it has the same impact. Nor is it about producing Powerpoint led presentations that see the attendee listening for a long time to a one way presentation. There are techniques in engaging people online that are very different to face to face.

A couple of years ago, I caught up with Kassy LaBorie, a global Virtual Classroom expert at Dale Carnegie Digital, to find out what she had to say about introducing this approach into organisations. Below is a clip of what she had to say, giving you three tips to help you introduce Virtual Classrooms into any organisation.

If you're interesting in watching some good webinars and learning from the best, then I highly recommend you check out those from the Learning and Performance Institute as well as those from Training Journal.

  • Thanks Ady, well worth listening to and timely as I have a training session online tomorrow!  Thanks, Trish

    • Thanks Trish. Would be interested to know what you picked up and after your webinar tomorrow, what difference it made?

  • Very useful tips here. Thanks for sharing!

  • Hi Ady,

worth listening to, thanks.  Really likes the discussion around preparing the learner i.e. getting them to use the hand up functions etc. to check they can use it. Also it almost gives permission/encouragement to them to use it during the session.

    • Yeah certainly Howard. Like Kassy says, we're all too familiar with the physical classroom having done it for years and since a young age (**cough cough ahem number of years ago). Yet this online stuff is quite new. In some surveys I've seen as much as half of those studying on qualifications like ours haven't ever attended a webinar/virtual classroom session.

Many of us in L&D are quite nervous when we 'deliver' one of these sessions for the first time. Makes me wonder how many of our participants may be nervous too?

  • This is a great listen

    Thanks Ady

    • Thanks Jo. Hope you are well
  • A Good listen for me there Ady. I like the structure: prepare yourself, the learner and the  orgn/envt.

Interestingly  I am both learner and deliverer on this one .

    • Ah great Rob. I have to agree with what Kassy says about experiencing a great online learning experience. Seems like no matter how long we've been doing this there's always something to learn and refresh on.

The links above.... there's some great examples in there worth a listen to.

See you soon Rob and thanks
