A recent Twitter discussion on learning transfer, prompted by the CIPD's Andy Lancaster, showed how useful Twitter can be for learning. By using a hashtag, in this case #LD_maxlearning, learning professionals could share their tips for all to see (by adding the hashtag to the tweet the tweet becomes visible to anyone looking for tweets with that same tag).

As you can see there are some fantastic tips here on learning transfer. As well as the tips that have been shared, I thought this was a great example of how Twitter can be used to elicit ideas, connect people and connect people to ideas and to start a conversation. Storify helps turns tweets into a resource with a much longer shelf life.

Got this definition for "learning transfer" from a link to Training Magazine Feb 2014: the ability of a learner to successfully apply the behavior, knowledge, and skills acquired in a learning event to the job, with a resulting improvement in job performance.
It is something we struggle with here. I suspect it is sometimes due to lack of confidence to make the change and/or sometimes due to lack of time in the working day to try out or practice the new techniques so as to reinforce the learning.
It is something I am currently tackling with our engineers, as we spend a fortune training them and really need to make sure it delivers into the business and any obstacles are removed.
Regarding using Twitter to learn from - how does anyone know what hashtags to look up? I have never heard of #LD_maxlearning for example.
Be interested in hearing how you develop this in your organistion, Alison. I think you are right - putting learning into practice has to be an intentional part of how the business works. It has to be a part of 'how things are done around here'.
As for Twitter, I find that by following the relevant people I get to find out about hashtags - that's the only way I found the one I shared. I'll work on an L&D list and share that soon.
