I was talking to someone the other day about the digital tools they use in their digital learning design role. When I say tools, I mean software, applications, websites, platforms etc. The question I asked was what are the 'tools' that you simply couldn't manage without. I figured it would be a good discussion here on the DPG Community.

So here is my challenge to you. If you were going to loose every single tool you had access to that you use in your work, with the exception of five, what would you keep?

  • Email is most important for me. But I m right now researching what the best HR tool is.

Also, Facebook is critical for me. I found a potential software over at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scandiumcorp/ But I don't have time to test it. I m very busy, hardly find some time to write a reply on DPG.

But on their website I see they offer Free 30-day trial. http://www.scandiumcorp.com/

Anyway if anyone used them let me know if it is worth my time.

  • Good question, Ady.

    Mine would be:

Google (finding things), email (comms tool for most of my clients), Twitter (for staying connected), Feedly (for managing news feeds), Wordpress (for publishing).

    • A sneak peak in the curating journalists toolbox there!

*notes down to self to have a look at dormant Feedly account!

  • Made me think about what I actually 'do' each day and what tools I need - there are a lot but if I had to lose all but 5 and still be able to do most of what I do then....

    Is the internet cheating?

    Is not then

    1) The internet - pretty much allows everything else

    If it is cheating then

    1. Google Search (find out how to do stuff)
    2. Twitter (keep up to date with stuff / personal network
    3. YouTube (find out how to do stuff)
    4. Slack (team communication / collaboration)
    5. Prezi (my go to presentation software)

I think with these tools I could find web-based alternatives to do everything else ;)

    • Haha. At times I wonder whether the internet is more important than running water in our house!

I've still yet to decide on mine. I'm really struggling to think of what I'd lose! It's all useful stuff. There's some similarities there for me though. I'm pretty certain that both Twitter and Slack will end up on my final team!
