CPD Curration for the People Occupation

This blog is here to give you a list of items/activities that you could use as a basis for your CPD log. I'll only list items that I think will help with DPG assignments or support you in the workplace. I'm mainly looking for facts and statistics that you can quote in your work. Thus providing you with useful references for assignments and ammunition to support points you might be trying to prove in the workplace.

I'll post an updated image of my CPD log in the thread from time to time along with an updated list of curated and evaluated items/activities. There you go, my gift to you: your CPD is taken care of. It's that easy.

  • I didn't curate last week as I was on annual leave (at Silverstone watching the GOAT for the 18th and final time😢). But I'm back and I have tweaked the format. I've gone a little more pointed in my ...er... points; I've reduced the number of words in said points and put the reference to the units and assessment criteria at the beginning of the sentence (mostly) in the hope that it will help you navigate my list:

    1. 5CO03 2.1, 2.2. External feedback from supermarket bosses indicates the need for a people practice solution: something needs to be done about the ‘talent crisis’. https://bit.ly/3jIDhZo this is also a current issue impacting organisations so it could help with 5CO01 1.3, 1.4 and 3.3.
    2. 5CO03 2.1, 2.2 again: new data is available on the gender pay gap. A people practice solution is needed and would be measurable. https://bit.ly/38BBdw7
    3. 3CO02 2.4 & 5CO02 3.4. People practices can add value by avoiding scandals and costs surrounding issues such as discriminatory behaviour as was reported to have happened at Amazon: https://bit.ly/3td25f7

    6. 5CO03 3.1, 5CO01 1.3, 1.4, 3.3, 2.5. Abuse of key workers is increasing, affecting well-being, productivity and changing what we need to deal with as people professionals: https://bit.ly/3jEg36O

    I'm back with my weekly (<cough>) snippet of curation of news that I've found recently where I can see immediate links to elements of the programmes here at DPG. Use them, store them and add them to your CPD log - whatever works for you. Enjoy :)

    1. Raising salaries isn’t the answer to fixing labour market shortages according to this article: https://bit.ly/3ATVzwK. You’ll also find stats about salary growth and ‘worker availability’.
    2. Imagine having the keys you’ve pressed on your keyboard monitored. What would that do to the culture of your organisation and your engagement? Is it legal? Is this an example of when technology can be unhelpful? Amazon may well be about to record employee keystrokes, take a look: https://bit.ly/37TS8cO
    3. If you are studying engagement, culture or the difference that line managers can make in the workplace take a look at this article which links respectful bosses to resilience and enjoyment in employees : https://bit.ly/37XQiaI
    4. For 5CO03: there is plenty of feedback indicating labour shortages, I’ve found more examples of initiatives organisations are using to overcome the issues. If you can come up with a way to measure the outcome then you have the makings of a good answer for 2.3 and 2.3. Take a look: https://bit.ly/3mh3osb
    5. Is the ‘pingdemic’ an issue the requires a solution from people professionals? If so, you could potentially use it as an alternative to point 4: https://bit.ly/3gg1xjv
    6. ‘nearly two-thirds of companies say that less than 25% of their learning programs feature mobile elements?’ according to this ebook: https://bit.ly/2WcWQzz. You’ll have to sign up to jump through a few hoops to access it (join a mailing list), but this could be useful for anyone studying technology in L&D/OD such as with 5OS02.

    I'm on annual leave on 27th August for my annual (and final) trip to see the GOAT - I do so more curation as soon as I can.

  • I didn’t curate last week due to annual leave and I’m on leave again next week so my curation will be a little less frequent than of late. Rest assured that this week I’ve been back at it to make you a list of sources to help with DPG assessments.

    1. Theresa Mayne has been looking out for us again: she has asked me to share a People Management article regarding "an important turnaround in an ongoing case that clarifies where burden of proof lies in discrimination cases".  Here is a link https://bit.ly/3AiOq8C
    2. Labour market shortages are big news at the moment. If you are looking for examples of how organisations are coping, take a look at Tesco’s joining bonus: https://bit.ly/3l9KeUG and Aldi’s pay rises: https://bit.ly/3lrlLKj. These are particularly relevant to logistics. 
    3. 3CO02 asks about the risks of social media. Here is some new data about how common it is becoming for employees to be contacted by staff outside of working hours: https://bit.ly/2TPoWQK
    4. 5CO01 asks about current trends and the impact of technology; 5CO01 asks about raising conflicts; 5HR01 is concerned with employee voice and we see the use of technology come up in several units (including 3CO02) – so I’m thinking that an article about an employee voicing their thoughts on an employer on social media (and then getting sued for a couple of million quid) could help be a useful example.     5. As people professionals, we can talk all day about the benefits of diversity and inclusion – but it can be an uphill battle: according to new research people co-operate better with people from their own country (https://bit.ly/37jzhYv) and we are more likely to engage with sexism if we regard the source as an intelligent one (https://bit.ly/2VqTTv3). Having sight of this information will hopefully help us meet this thing head-on – and it could help you justify D&I measures in your assignments and workplace.
    6. You can bet that John Lewis failing to meet minimum wage requirements requires a people practice initiative to put it right – this could help those studying 2.2 and 3.3 of 5CO03. Here are some details: https://bit.ly/3fC4URD

  • Anyone studying business environment, organisational performance (3CO01, 5CO01, 7Co01 and CHR) have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to finding factors that impact organisations – in the shape of the pandemic. Add in the ‘pingdemic’ and you’ve got plenty to work with. There are so many sources out there that I’ll let you choose your own. I have, however, picked out 4 more items this week which I've found to be relevant to various elements of the DPG programmes. Here you go:

    1. When it comes to labour markets, the current tight labour market should follow the theory that salaries should be increasing – but they aren’t. He is a quick read from Sky News which could be a stepping-stone to further reading on the: https://bit.ly/3iEhTD1
    2. There I was a couple of weeks ago extolling the virtues of the Deloitte website because they provide all kinds of information that is helpful – yet they are in the news this week because a Partner in the business told younger employees that their private time was not their own (!). This could be an example to use if you are studying whistleblowing, fairness, culture, bad practice and generally putting ones’ foot in it. Take a look: https://bit.ly/3rnHzI3
    3. There are questions in the qualifications about the impact managers have on reward and 5CO03 asks about leadership actions that conflict with ethics. Here is a new article, from the BPS, in which the title pretty much explains why it might help you: People In Positions Of Power Are More Likely To Blame And Punish Others For Poor Performance.     4.     Nearly one in 10 workers have been asked to reapply for their jobs since the start of lockdown, research suggests.
  • Here it is, that moment you've been waiting for(!): my list of resources curated over the last week that could be used to help you with certain assessment questions across the DPG qualifications.

    1. Ethics is a concept that is a kind of golden thread running through all our CIPD programmes. I’ve been poking around on the Future Learn website this week and the Ethical Management and Decision-Making programme promises to deliver an Ethical Decision-Making Model and one of the topics is Corporate Responsibility. Access is free for 5 weeks, which should be plenty of time to grab some useful learning and that duration suggests that the course isn’t so complex that it would distract from your DPG programme completely.     2. An external factor that could have an impact on certain organisations is the Professional Qualifications bill which, this article says, could make it harder to recruit from outside the UK. If this is something that you want to use for assessment criteria 1.3 in 5CO03 (or CHR), click on the link: https://bit.ly/3wM7SZc
    3. Criteria 1.4&3.3 in 5CO01 ask for examples of current issues that will affect products and services. What would be the impact on products and services if parents don’t have enough childcare over the summer holidays and can the people professional help?     4. Here is an article if you are looking for a contemporary story on fairness or a People Practice issue that requires a solution. It’s about there being a two-tier system in Google’s remote working policy. Take a look: https://bit.ly/3B0EOR0
    5. Remote working is another subject that can be threaded into responses to assessment questions about lots of subjects such as culture, reward, engagement, inclusion and technology. There is a new study from Goldman Sachs with yet more data to back up the positives of remote work. The article also lists some big names from both the for and against home working camp.
