However, it’s not exclusive to just L&D people it is a great technique for anyone who is working with others, going through change in their organisation or just wants to get to the heart of any subject and make it the best it can be.

During the discussion it became evident that we all need to display a number of the HR map behaviours , courage to challenge, curious, skilled influencer and collaborative together with tactful, probing questioning but above all listening, listening and listening.

The chat was as ever, informative, thought provoking and challenging, the 1 hour flew by. It was great to chat with people who are like minded outside of your own organisation, struggling with the same issues and curious about the same things. There were some great quotes, a few ideas for sharing more and always a lol or two! Here is the link to the Needs Analysis discussion, a good resource with some tools to use:- http://community.dpgplc.co.uk/forum/topics/diagnostic-needs-analysis-toolkit

Other ideas for future community chats also came to the fore and I’m hoping they will be on the agenda soon Mike as we all could have chatted on for longer I’m sure. One of the ideas suggested last night was “Line Managers and relationships with L&D” it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this and any other ideas you may have for future chat subjects.

I’m finding the community chats are fast becoming an event I look forward to, they are a great support to the learning programme I am on and really help to organise your thoughts on the topics up for discussion. I personally feel supported by the chats and know that I can go online anytime and find someone to bounce ideas around with and ask questions so that I can develop in to a L&D Practitioner who firmly has her feet on the ground, understands her organisation, doesn’t do fluff and keeps it real!

I’d urged everyone to check out the chat when it’s posted up and be on line for the next one. Connect with me on my profile, send me a message or leave a comment, I’d love to hear any questions or comments.

To Chat or Not to Chat!https://community.dpgplc.co.uk/blog/to-chat-or-not-to-chat2012-11-15T18:40:09.000Z2012-11-15T18:40:09.000ZStephanie Leekhttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/StephanieLeek

Well, I decided I would take part in the chat room event held on the evening of 14th November at 8.30pm for an hour. The subject was something close to my heart – how to be an effective practitioner, I am currently studying for my L&D Practitioner Certificate. I have never entered in to a chat room before (really, never!) so I thought “why not, it will be different” and it was.

I had no idea how it worked but with Mike’s guidance, I logged on, entered the chat room and once we started found myself getting really involved. I thought at first I would sit back and just read the chat that was going on, observe and learn that way, but within seconds of the first question being posted, I was in there, adding my thoughts and responding to others comments too.

It didn’t feel like learning, it was great, so interactive and immediate. I felt enthused and quite excited by it all. It was so good to chat with like-minded people and proved really thought provoking.

Mike hosted the chat and posted his questions to really get us all thinking plus we had a few funnies along the way which kept it all flowing. We didn’t get through all of the questions as the chat really took off on each one posted so I can’t wait for the next one and hope it will be soon (there’s a hint there Mike!). I will definitely be signing up straight away and would encourage anyone else to do the same. If you haven’t been involved in one before, there is nothing to worry about, you simply log on and take part as much or as little as you like, it’s so simple. The benefit is that you get a more collaborative learning experience, it’s very different from the class room or anything else for that matter as it’s live, the chat evolves, it lives and it breaths and it’s great fun, we all had a lol at some point!

Hope to chat with more of you soon at the next event. If you would like to know more, head to the Huntingdon Level 3 group and post me a comment.

1st Community Chat - The Power of Conversationshttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/blog/1st-community-chat-the-power-of-conversations2012-06-21T10:30:00.000Z2012-06-21T10:30:00.000ZMike Collinshttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/MikeCollins

I'm a big believer in the power of conversation and its importance in sharing ideas, connecting people and supporting the learning process. This conversation has traditionally taken place face to face or over the telephone but with the meteoric rise in social networks & platforms and online meetings e.g. Skype / WebEx etc over the last few years, more conversation takes place online than ever before.

There are those who would argue that online communication is a poor relation to face to face and that online meetings & conversation don't have the depth and produce the quality outputs that a face to face conversation or meeting provides. On the other hand there are those that would opt for online communication rather than face to face. In my opinion the modern professional should be well versed in all forms of communication and feel at home conversing online and face to face in different situations and in different circumstances whether it's in a forum, community, skype, instant messager, face to face meeting, phone, Facetime, Twitter etc etc - you get the idea.

For me it's about flexibility, adaptability, relationships and of course productivity - being able to adapt and meet the needs of your business, colleagues, customers, clients and stakeholders and having the skills in the toolbox to match the situation with the right approach.

But what about personal development?

Well the same applies - conversations are key (80% of what we learn we learn informally), it's about being able to use a range of different approaches to meet your needs and this can take form in a variety of ways depending on what you're looking to achieve.

I started joining Twitter chats about 12 months ago - the two that I'm mainly involved in are #lrnchat & #chat2lrn both are focused on Learning & Development but there are 100's of other 'Tweetchats' out there that allow people to connect across the globe via Twitter and discuss topic of interests and share ideas. They really do help you learn and process new information and when you get to grips with how it works it is a real value add activity for me.

I love the concept of spending 1 hour just getting a group of people together to discuss a topic and share ideas and this is what the DPG Community Chats are about. They will last approx one hour and will discuss different topics each chat..... the first chat is scheduled for next Tuesday 26th June 4pm-5pm. You can find out more info from the events section

All you need to do is log in and go to the main chat room for 4pm where I'll start the chat and do some intros before sharing the first question, there are normally about 6 questions (approx 10 minutes on each question)

Next weeks topic will be "The Importance of Continuous Professional Development"

There will be lots to discuss and share and I hope you join us for the first community chat to see how it works and to benefit from the power of conversation

See you there !!
