It's International Working Out Loud Week

As more and more organisations integrate technology and social tools in to the workflow, HR and Learning & Development are starting to use these technologies as ways to transform what they do and how they do it.

However many organisations struggle to adopt these technologies as it fundamentally shifts how work is done making it more open and collaborative.

Technology is purely an enabler and it's people of course who create value from using these tools to work more openly and collaboratively. This is a big shift as many organisations are built around a culture where knowledge is power rather than one where knowledge sharing is seen as something altogether more powerful. As more organisations adopt Social Enterprise Networks this new way of working threatens to transform the way in which we communicate and perhaps this means the days of email are numbered?

This shift challenges the very premise of command, control and traditional hierarchies where top down control and communication has been the dominant way of working for so long.

  • So how do you start to work more openly?
  • How do you start to share what you know more confidently?
  • How do you move from a culture of knowledge is power to one where knowledge sharing is seen and recognised as powerful?

I'm a big believer in HR and Learning & Development being role models and leading this workplace evolution, demonstrating the HOW. Building trust and influence through open ways of working enables people to connect with others and remove silos with organisations.

One of the ways iof doing this is Working Out Loud - you can find out more about the 5 elements of working out loud in this post from John Stepper

The 5 elements of Working Out Loud

You can also tap in to the thoughts of Luis Suarez who is Chief Emergineer and People Enabler at IBM and has been living without email since 2008.

Working Out Loud in Action

This week 17th-24th November is International Working Out Loud week and we're looking for our community members to get involved and post a status, a discussion, a resource or write a blog post about what your doing in your role now that could help others. You can also find out more by following the #WOLweek hashtag on Twitter.

It doesn't need to be fancy or long - just narrate your work - this could open up some ideas and get others involved but it just might help someone else with this network with something that are doing.

It will also be great CPD evidence as working out loud is a way to critically reflect on what you're doing and how you're doing it.

So who's going to get involved and take on the challenge of working out loud?

Look forward to hearing from you
