Keep on Chatting!

Last night was the second community chat on the subject of Learning Needs Analysis (LNA).

For those of us working on our L&D courses this element of what we do is so crucial in order to provide considered, tailored and robust training events, none of us like to be seen as “fluffy”.  However, it’s not exclusive to just L&D people it is a great technique for anyone who is working with others, going through change in their organisation or just wants to get to the heart of any subject and make it the best it can be.

During the discussion it became evident that we all need to display a number of the HR map behaviours , courage to challenge, curious, skilled influencer and collaborative together with tactful, probing questioning but above all listening, listening and listening.

The chat was as ever, informative, thought provoking and challenging, the 1 hour flew by.  It was great to chat with people who are like minded outside of your own organisation, struggling with the same issues and curious about the same things.  There were some great quotes, a few ideas for sharing more and always a lol or two! Here is the link to the Needs Analysis discussion, a good resource with some tools to use:-  http://community.dpgplc.co.uk/forum/topics/diagnostic-needs-analysis-toolkit

Other ideas for future community chats also came to the fore and I’m hoping they will be on the agenda soon Mike as we all could have chatted on for longer I’m sure.  One of the ideas suggested last night was “Line Managers and relationships with L&D” it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this and any other ideas you may have for future chat subjects.

I’m finding the community chats are fast becoming an event I look forward to, they are a great support to the learning programme I am on and really help to organise your thoughts on the topics up for discussion.  I personally feel supported by the chats and know that I can go online anytime and find someone to bounce ideas around with and ask questions so that I can develop in to a L&D Practitioner who firmly has her feet on the ground, understands her organisation, doesn’t do fluff and keeps it real!

I’d urged everyone to check out the chat when it’s posted up and be on line for the next one.  Connect with me on my profile, send me a message or leave a comment, I’d love to hear any questions or comments.

  • Hi Stephanie,

I agree with Mike, a good post! LNA is most certainly a wider ranging discipline and yet so often overlooked or ignored.  That is why we need to role model how it needs to be done and that I know you will do well.

As for other topics, I need to reflect on that one.

    Speak soon

  • Thanks for the comment Mike, is the date for the next chat you mentioned "coaching for performance" released yet?

  • Another great post Stephanie and I'm so pleased that the chats are becoming a regular event in your calendar and are adding value.

I think the point you raise about LNA not being exclusive to L&D is really important, those first fact finding conversations are the building blocks of effective consultancy and the skills and behaviours that are needed move across a wide range of disciplines not only L&D and HR. By getting this stage of the learning cycle right not only to we create and design effective solutions but we move from being order takers to a trusted business partner adding value (not fluffiness ;-)

The chats for me are useful as they provide a real sense of engagement across this community - like you have written before in To Chat of Not to Chat - they are so interactive and immediate and despite being online provide me with a real sense that I'm building relationships with my fellow community members all of whom have interests and passions similar to mind - crucially all with a thirst to learn more and keep developing.

It might not feel like learning but it certainly is and I can't wait for the next one on Coaching for Performance next week. Hope to see you there and keep up the great work with the blogs as they are making me think and reflect on every chat.

We also need to think about a chat calendar for next year as we've already touched on some good topics - I started a thread a while ago (as the community was very young) on what topics would make a good chat. Perhaps we should try and get this going again? All ideas welcome
