Let's Talk About Mental Health

Today is World Mental Health Day. So what better time to discuss such an important topic?

In the UK, we are fortunate to have a reasonably developed understanding of how important this issue is.

For example, the government has taken the step of appointing the first ever suicide prevention minister. And high-profile figures, from Clarke Carlilse to Ruby Wax, are drawing attention to the issue, bringing it into the public consciousness.

In short, it is being talked about, which is a big thing.

However, there is much more to be done. For example, 4500 people a year fall victim to suicide. Also, according to the Institute of Directors, over half of British employers have been approached by staff suffering from mental health problems.

What can be done to reduce the suicide rate? What can be done to tackle mental health problems?

Regarding the latter, I have my own methods. I read, watch comedies, go for walks by the canal and confide in people I trust. I feel I now have a good portfolio of methods to keep on the right side of healthy.

I’d love to get a discussion started about this topic on such an appropriate day. What do you do to stay mentally healthy? Comment below, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  • Initiating discussions on mental health is pivotal in nursing, and seeking assistance from do my nursing discussion post for me services enriche these conversations. Addressing mental health openly promotes understanding and destigmatization. These services aid in crafting insightful discussions, enabling nurses to explore diverse perspectives and evidence-based practices. By fostering dialogue, they empower nurses to advocate effectively and provide compassionate care in the realm of mental health.

  • Thanks for sharing this Richy. Mental Health is an important issue. I love the idea of having a day dedicated to thinking about this stuff. But everyday should be a day where we have deep consideration for the emotions and well-being of those around us.

Last week, I watched a video on Emotion at Work. The simple three stage strategy of BE HEARD, SAFE SPACE and MOVE ON shared in the video really sat with me well as being a sensible approach any organisation can take to build a culture where emotions are okay and it's not just all about happy clappy.

Perhaps if more organisations built cultures like this..... we'd have a load less cases of anxiety, depression and burnout....

I shared the video on the HR Zone which can be viewed here.

    • I totally agree Ady. It should be a constant process of empathy and awareness.

I have no doubt that building an open, honest and pragmatic culture around the issue of mental health would have amazing effects on wellbeing.
