This article in the Training Journal by Dr Susan Laing, puts forward the case for using the apprenticeship levy to develop managers too.

Whilst not disputing the need for employers to use the levy to fund technicians, engineers and young people via vocational training pathways, Dr Laing also argues that the current skills challenges we have in the UK today require great leadership, and that funding MBAs (for example) is a route to this.

  • I have just set up a member of my team onto the Level 3 apprenticeship.  I did struggle to find a provider that offered this, I could only locate two.  Is this something DPG are looking into in the future.  At the moment there are no organisations offering Level 7, hopefully as this picks up more providers will be available.    FIngers crossed.....

    • Hi Melanie

The good news is that we are working on our level 3 HR Apprenticeship offer right now. It will be ready by the end of March. So please contact us for any more staff that you need training on this !

At the moment there isn't a level 7 apprenticeship in HR however I believe that this is currently a lot of lobbying for this with employers, so it might ttherefore get approved for trailblaser development , so wait and see, watch this space.

  • Really interesting read! We have not been taking advantage of the levy at all, and after reading the DPG survey about the levy, I did some research and was suprised to hear that it could also help fund internal development. I am looking into options as we speak...

    • This is fantastic Leanne - both that the DPG Survey about the levy prompted your thoughts, and that your research has given you additional options!  I look forward to hearing about what you and your organisation do...

      • Hi

Are DPG looking to offer the level 5 HR Management as an Apprenticeship? My employer may want to put me forward to do my level 5 which I would be realy interested in doing.

I also understand there are funding bands, and this may not cover the full amount of the course. Has anyone come accross this yet?

        Thanks

        • Hi Leanne

Yes DPG do offer level 5 HR Business Partner/Consultant Apprenticeship standard at level 5. We have open programmes starting this month and then every month across GB at key locations. We can deliver to levy paying employers and the funding is £9,000. The apprenticeship includes the CIPD HRM level 5 Diploma.

          Would you like information?

          • Yes please, that would be great.

  • Agree - we are already using the levy for Level 5 L&M.  Looking to use at levels 3, 6 and 7 too.  No reason to think those skills are not as important to develop as any other within an organisation.

    • This is great to hear Ian - and agree an organisation's leadership skills are critical too.
