Hi all,
Hope everyone has had a great Christmas break, and looking forward to getting stuck into work again! ;-)
I told my CEO before we broke for the Hols, that we need to revisit our appraisal system - and he agrees. Having reviewed it recently, it's obviously not really doing it's job. It seems to be used as a reason for spending an hour or so chatting about how wonderful things are, tick a few boxes and then send it HR.
I do my best to work out any training/development needs, but I'm also aware that the appraisal doesn't really offer much of an opening for the manager or the employee to discuss any concerns or problems. This becomes all too obvious when I get an a glowing appraisal, followed a few weeks later by a visit from a disgruntled manager or employee asking for help in sorting out an issue that has simply been ignored for months.
I know I will need to put in some time, in training the managers of course, but I feel that will be far easier if I am using a new format, than trying to use the existing one.
So.. if anyone has an example of a simple to use, effective appraisal process that does what is needed I'd be most grateful for some tips.
Tks
Steve

Hi Steve
This is on my to do list this year as well. We have nothing once the staff get past their probationary period and I like you want to be able to get more out of it and don't want it to be seen as a chore Managers and employees go through and also don't want anything that comes up in it to be a shock to the employee!
I really want a tool that will focus on the employees objectives but be seen as something that will help develop our staff and highlight any training issues and also if staff want to progress.
Thanks for link Sorina

Hi Mike,
Interesting you should ask this..I have been wanting to find a better appraisal method myself for our organisation. We are currently using typical S.M.A.R.T forms, but it would be great to see something new and innovative as I find them a little dull. It's of course still important that what's discussed can be SMART, but I would love to something new! Thanks for adding this discussion and thank you Sorina for the link!
Cheers,
Toril
