D&I and Mental Health

Hi,

As part of my company D&I, we have Mental Health First Aiders in place and I've been tasked to see how we ican mprove our approach to mental Health.   Has anyone been involved in this which and would be happy to share their experiences, or could point me in the right direct of suitable websites?

Many thanks

  • Hi Carole

    Some suggestions that might help:

    • Promote your MHFA's, who they are and what their purpose is
    • Create an internal intranet site with useful resources (ours covers the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, with resources in each category)
    • Observe national awareness days (eg, we just observed Time to Talk day and employees were tasked to call someone they don't routinely work with for a catch up.  Working remotely, we've lost touch with those we don't work with day to day)
    • Send wellbeing e-mails.  I do this routinely and pick a subject that contributes to positive mental wellbeing rather than it being targeted to mental health conditions.
    • Sign up to the Mindful Employer Charter as a tangible statement of your committment to supporting mental wellbeing.  ME also offers organisations support.
    • Provide Managers with training (we've just run sessions on 'Being a Mindful Manager').
    • Update your Sickness Absence Policy
    • Create a Wellbeing Policy
    • Not knowing your company, I don't know if you're in a position to offer benefits that cost, but you could consider an Employee Assistance Programme and also engaging with an Occupational Health company for adhoc referrals.  We're fortunte enough to have an EAP, but we've recently introduced 'Perks at Work'.  Although not an EAP in itself, it offers wellbeing advice, free online exercise, ways to save money etc and so arguably, contributes to positive mental wellbeing.  And it's free to sign up if you have less than 200 (I think) employees.
    • In your local area, check out if you have an NHS service called 'TalkWorks'.  It's a great resource to signpost people to; they can access CBT for free and they can self refer (ie they don't need to go through their GP).
    • You may have some of these initiatives in place and so it may just be a case of reminding people and making information accessible.

    I hope that helps :-)

    Best wishes

    Victoria
