Hi all,
We have two office locations and both have employed independent cleaners at a rate of £10-12 per hour. One of our cleaners has just left and an employee has offered to take it on, however our Accounts Dept. has said that we cannot pay her more for cleaning than her hourly rate of pay (less than £10 p/h). I'm not sure what to do as it doesn't seem fair to pay one cleaner significantly less than the other, and below the going rate for cleaning (which seems to be £10-£12 p/h), but I do see Accounts' point- does anyone have an suggestions?
Thank you,
Chrissy

Hi Chrissy
So this is an interesting one, and typically it is the role that attracts the rate for the job not the individual. Maybe it is worth understanding what the concerns of the finance team are, as yes I would agree that paying different rates for the job is not good practice,
Aside from the equal pay aspects, if say one were female and one male, it is also about the fairness and consistency, Also I suspect pretty damaging for the psychological contract if the other employee learns of the varying rates.
I hope this helps
Good luck!
