EU Vote

How has everyone been communicating with their staff about the EU vote? If at all?

I came across this article the other day:

http://www.cipd.co.uk/pm/peoplemanagement/b/weblog/archive/2016/04/18/should-you-tell-your-staff-how-to-vote-in-the-eu-referendum.aspx

and was of the opinion that we should not communicate anything - however yesterday, our Senior Partners made the decision to issue a statement about why the business leaders would be supporting the remain campaign. This statement was emailed to staff this morning (from HR email) and has welcomed nothing but negativity.....messenger being well and truly shot!

What's everyone else's experience??

  • Well the votes have been cast Becky and no matter what side you were on or your political or economic beliefs - there will be changes ahead.

As a business leader I guess you have to act in the best interests of your organisation. Hold fast to what you believe to be true and use your experience to try and work out what leaving the EU means to trade and commercial interests as well as the employment market. Ultimately they need to act in the interests of the business and importantly the staff.

Your senior partners have every right to communicate what they believed to be in the best interests of their business - provided it wasn't preachy or stating that you should all vote remain as well. Top down emails are always dealt with negatively especially on something like this that has divided the country (16 million people it still quite a lot).

There were a lot of business leaders who came out and supported remain http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/22/1200-business-leade...

Doesn't look like enough people took any notice though.

What is the general feeling in work today?

    • Hi Mike,

The tension in our office today is palpable!!! We are based in London and work a lot with the EU - all deals with them at the moment have been put on hold.

      It's a daunting time.

We as a country will get through it, we always do, but the vast majority of us in our office today are completely shocked by the outcome.

      • Hi Danni,

Our main office is based up in Manchester, one of only two areas out side of London (Liverpool being the other) to vote remain. We're genuinely shocked and still trying to figure out what this all means in the short term and what the longer term implications will be. The margin was so close with over 16 million people wanting to stay part of the EU. The division is huge and there is a lot of work to be done to re-unite the country and give us confidence about the future. Love your sentiment that as a county we will get through it.

HR now more than ever will need to provide leadership and guide organisations through what will be an uncertain period.

Who knows what the future holds and how this will play out.

        Mike
