Morning all

News that the WHO have classified gaming disorder as a mental health condition may be of interest in am employment perspective.

It will be interesting to see whether this could also possibly meet the definition of a disability for the purposes of the Equality Act.

  • I heard this on the news the other day and I'm a little torn by it to be honest.  On the one hand, it is easy to see that highly addictive games that are out there will clearly be capable of affecting the mental health of those that are drawn in to them.  Quite likely that there will also be physical attrition as well over time.  I guess it is yet another health issue that will raise itself more and more often as games become more interactive, more 'real' and more easily available.

My main concern lies with how it will be percieved by senior managers in any organisation, who may well struggle to comprehend that this may well be a disability - and as such it's not a straight forward disciplinary matter should the effects creep into workplace performance.

Only time will tell I guess as to how prevalent this will be.

    • Hi Steve

Yes it will be interesting to see how this plays out, I guess if it follows the line of alochol and drug additction for the purposes of employment law they are not considered a disability.

That said within society addictions seem to be more prevalent, I have certainly seen an increase in gambling addictions recently.

      All the best
