How does HR deal with a crises of culture?

The recent VW scandal and the fitting of devices which result in lower emission rates for testing purposes has led to a furore in the motor industry.

VW chief Martin Winterkorn remains defiant over the emissions cheating scandal

What is HRs role in terms of helping to create the right culture and is the motor industry facing a crisis similar to the banking industry?

Regards

Sarah

  • I don't know the answer to the second part of the question Sarah - time will tell I suppose. I feel very sorry for anyone who works for volkswagon at the moment as I expect they'll be worrying about the future of the business, unless they have had reassurances from the executive board - which hopefully they have by now.

HR of course have a role in helping to create the right culture by ensuring the values are explicit and well communicated, that performance management includes behavioural objectives and that their reward strategy is aligned with the values. Also encouraging their leadership to set a good example in their language (comms) and behaviour.

I would expect an organisation like VW to have a compliance team at head office, and possibly at every manufacturing site, to ensure compliance with the laws of each country they work in; that team may well have some explaining to do now.

    • Hi Alison

Yes I agree and it would also appear that it is something of a wider problem within the industry?

      • Hi all,

I agree with what you have mentioned.

I think, the main role for the HR would be to restore the confidence of employees in the company (VW) and to reassure that all values are well maintained followed by an action plan which needs to be transparent.

        Regards, Murooj

        • Yes Murooj I think you are right, I think the challenge is how to embed the values in such a diverse global organisation. All the best Sarah
