Innovative ways to market yourself

Morning all,

I'm looking to find some innovative ways to market yourself and also a good way to keep an online learning record.

I was thinking about using PowToons to make something to go along with my CV http://www.powtoon.com/ but wasn't sure if anybody else had any interesting thoughts. I know I should also really start a blog so again I would be interested on the best platform to do this.

Many thanks :)

  • All,

Thank you all so much for your support on this! I knew I could count on this community for some ideas and support :)

Steve, that sounds fantastic and I would love to hear about some of the methods that they chose. I think you have taken a truly inspired approach to open this to all!

    • As a follow up to the training applications I mentioned:

The vast majority stuck to the traditional route of completing one of our application forms, a few sent a cv, one or two wrote a letter and one that really stood out - sent in a Prezi presentation. That was it. No videos, no facebook or twitter approaches - to be fair, I think it would be brave to try a tweet as an application!  It would however, have been a stand out in this case. the prezi one has gone straight through the sift for interview - unanimously selected.

      • That's some interesting results Steve but for me not overly surprising.

I think it's difficult to take risks and try something new.... I guess for me if I did something different (such as a Prezi) and didn't get the interview as they were only looking for a traditional CV it would say a lot about the organisation to me anyway and make me ask if I would have fitted into the culture!

I may have to stay away from tweeting my CV though! Although it can be a good way to get confirmation of receipt....

  • Hi Richard,

I am about to advertise 8 vacancies aimed at young people who are looking for a career in conservation but are lacking skills. They'll spend a year with me at Dorset Wildlife Trust on a HLF funded programme.

We've had plenty of success over the last three years with all of them moving into employment in the sector.

This year I'm throwing it open to them as individuals about how they apply. I will provide them with links to our facebook, twitter, youtube, LinkedIn sites as well as email and postal addresses. It's up to them to market themselves in any way they wish.  The idea is that it levels the playing field - this is a training opportunity so no previous experience is required. People with little experience at CV writing will be able to compete on an equal footing with those that are experienced. It's all about getting the message across to us that they are enthused, inspired and have that certain something that makes them stand out as being ideal for the post.

It's going to be interesting - though a little challenging to keep up with all the routes in!

I'll keep you posted on any 'golden nugget' ideas that come through. It may even be worth a blog..

    Steve

    • Steve I'm also keen to hear how it goes and how different things get as oppose to the traditional CV

Let's hope people see it an an opportunity to shine - a blog sounds like a great idea to tell the story of how it unfolds :)

  • Thought you might find this useful Richard

  • Just come across another social resume tool that looks quite good called career cloud

    Check it out here

  • Hi Richard

LinkedIn is a must and is a window for your professional endeavors and experience as well as build that all important network of contacts.

About.me is a nice way to keep all your social presences together

Vizualize.me is another nice way to create an online and visual CV

I also like Scoop.it to find and share good content - curating good content helps build your reputation as someone worth following.

Twitter of course is another way to find and share good content as well as to network

In terms of blogs I still think wordpress is the easiest blog platform to use and get started.

I've also seen some really nice ways to create a visual CV using Prezi - check out the post on is the traditional CV dead as this ties in strongly.

Whatever you use or however you want to use these tools you need to be clear on what your trying to convey and how you want others perceive you. As they say "start with the end in mind"

Hope this helps a little :)

    •

      Mike,

As always this helps a great deal :). I am on Linked In but have to admit that I probably don't use it properly! I'll definitely have a look at the others!

  • Thanks Krystyna I will take a look :)
