Hi all

This was in the news yesterday, and is a case currently working its way through  Tribunbal.

It will be interesting to see whether the claimant is successful in arguing that veganism is a philopsophical belief and whether this will satisfy the tests for this.

There is some great debate here about discrimnation on the grounds of different beliefs:

What are your thoughts on this as a topic?

Enjoy!

  • Hi Sarah. It depends on the vegan! Some people eat a plant-based diet due to health benefits, others are vegan for the sake of animals. There's also a mix of both, and other points-of-view, I'm sure.

I suppose the animal welfare vegans are following a philosophical line. The belief is simply that humans shouldn't use animal products as they don't need to. It becomes a bit more complex by the fact that veganism is a component of various religions and cultures. I imagine that some discrimination cases become more complex when that's in the mix.

I don't know where I stand, really. I'm vegan myself, but don't really think about it! I just love plant-based food and animals, and the lifestyle is just normal to me, even mundane. I've not had any problems, and have no issue at all with humour/jokes as long as they're done with good intentions. But that's just my take, and my experience. Perhaps I would feel more certain if my experience had been different.

    Thanks,

    Richy
