Mental Health First Aiders

Hi,

Have you introduced mental health first aiders into your organisation? If so we currently pay our qualified first aiders a nominal monthly fee for carrying out their role. Are you paying your mental health first aiders at all?

Thanks,

Mykela

  • Many other comorbidities began to appear on my nervous background. And it's good that the specialists help me go through text therapy and get out of this depression. They are really professionals in their field, so subtly and hatefully pull me out of this state. I will be glad if you can help.

  • Hi All.

I came across an organisation called Time to Change last year. It's an amazing organisation that is lifting the profile of mental health and getting everyone talking.

This week, on Thursday 7th Febuary they're running their 'Time to Talk' day and you'll find a whole load of useful resources and inspiration on their website.

    Check it out just here.

Do let us know what you're doing to support this day and mental health awareness in your organisations. I'm interested to hear.

  • Dear Mykela,

We haven't got  a mental health first aider yet but we do have a lot of information like posters, leaflets. On top of that we have  Health & Safety advice who have done a course about mental health and can give advice and to direct to the right direction for the staff who are experiencing these issues. Regarding pay to mental health first aider it depends on skills and experience he can offer.

    .Best wishes.

  • what is that paying for?

    to helping mentally challenged/struggling people?

  • Hi Mykela,

That's a great question. I'm interested to see what people reply with. On one hand, I can see the value of paying a nominal fee for carrying out their role. On the other I'm not so sure. The reason I have reservations is I know in my experience some people suffering with mental health issues can be really good at hiding their issues and putting on a brave face. I get the role of a Mental Health First Aider would be to provide support when someone has been identified as needing support. At the same time though, I'd love to see workplaces where everyone was truly on the look out for the other humans around them irrespective of their title or payment for additional duties.

I'm interested to see what responses you get.

It might be worth posting this question on a dicussion that's already happening on this topic which you'll find just here. There's a few people commenting and joining in so it might get you some good replies.

Let me know how you get on with this and good luck

    • Thanks Ady - I have spoken with a few other local authorities in our region and the general consensus is that they pay their MHFA in the same way that their physical first aiders receive a fee!

    • Hi

I work for a fairly big organisation and last year they trainned 42 people to become Mental Health First Aiders. I am one of them, but everyone who applied for the role has done so on a voluntary basis and we do it along side our day jobs. The course was provided by the company and I got the certificate at the end.

Personally I volunteered for the role because I am a carer for my mother who has Biapolar and wanted to help others where possible. I know others signed up for a similar reason. My worry would be, if an allowance is introduced, would people sign up for the role for the right reasons or would money be the motivation in which case have you got the right people in that role?

With my organisation we keep a log of the times we deliver MHFA so we aren't peanalised for not doing our day job and the role is always within working hours which personally I think is fair.

      Hope this helps.
