It was a pleasure to attend the Training Journal awards last week and I was lucky enough to be right in the thick of the story. My job was to capture the night in a digital way to produce a video that reflected what the evening was all about.

I got to talk to a whole lot of great people, each sharing their own story with me. Meeting the judges, I got to find out what it was like to judge an event and what great talent we have in the L&D field. I was able to speak with people who had entered awards and got to really understand the nerves they carried as they waited to find out if they'd won. They described what it would mean to win an award as well as how proud they already were for being in a position to even enter and be shortlisted.

It was all pretty inspirational really and it got me thinking of what L&D teams can learn from award winning programmes and initiatives.

But the question that really inspired me, was one the following day at Training Journal's brunch event. We were asked to consider what award winning L&D teams would be doing in the future. It's such a great question, I'd like to open it up here on the DPG Community:

So, here's the question: If you were an L&D awards judge in 2018, what new category would you like to judge and what would the criteria be?

I'd really love to hear your thoughts.

  • I'm not sure we can predict the next 12 months let alone the next 3 years but looking at the award categories and how they have changed in the last 3 years might help us see a trend. In many awards we have seen things like:

    • Best Use Of Gamification / Best Learning Game
    • Best Use Of Social & Collaborative Technology
    • Best use of Mobile Learning

But of course learning isn't just about technology so I'd be looking at impact as we know how much impact L&D teams can have when given the opportunity - they can literally transform an organisation.

    How about

    • Most innovative Learning & Development team - award for the team that has doing something completely innovative in our field
    • Transformation Award - award for the L&D team that has helped transform an organisation through approach to learning
    • Collaborative Consultant award - award providing to a person / team who has delivered a project / changed
    • The Virtual Reality award - best use of virtual reality to support learning
    • Community Manager of the Year - award provided for the best use and management of a community of practice.

    You never know....
