Whether you are at this week's CIPD L&D Show in London or following it from afar, I have a question. That is, could you act as eyes and ears for the rest of the community by sharing anything that caught your attention? I thought it would be interesting to see if we could share a few points in this discussion thread. They can be just that, a bullet point or an image or anything else that conveys the point of what you've seen or heard.

If we could, then I'm hoping it will be useful for everyone else. Just a thought! Let's see what happens . . .

  • Sorry this was a little while ago now and I've only just got around to responding!

Some of my key take-aways were from Nick Shackleton-Jones' 'The Secret to Learning Design.' He said that there are 2 things you need to do when creating learning:

Create Resources for the things people actually care about and WANT to learn

    OR

Create Experiences for the things that people don't really care about, such as mandatory training - it makes it memorable, just like his banana munching competition!

I loved the idea of getting experienced members of staff involved - BP's approach was asking staff what bits of advice they had and giving people 20 seconds to give the advice in a video clips for everyone else to access when they needed it.

Asking staff what their top ten concerns / challenges / worries at work are and then using that information to build resources to help was a great tip.

They main message that came out of the event was resources not courses - as Maxine says below, this just makes so much sense, and in an organisation whose staff are all very 'time poor' I'm sure this approach would be much more accessible!

    • Thanks for sharing Emma!

  • Our stand was right next to the Technology for Learning arena - it was quite handy :)

One of the presentations was by Open University who had just released a report called Trends in Learning 2016

You can find our more and download the report here http://www.open.ac.uk/research/main/news/trends-learning-2016-report

  • Here's a couple of links of great CIPD L&D Show content.

First one here which is recordings of some of the five-minute ignite sessions: http://community.dpgplc.co.uk/blog/sessions-from-cipdldshow-to-igni...

There's also this one here of useful curated content from Ian Pettigrew of the CIPD blog squad: https://storify.com/kingfishercoach/cipd-l-d-show-2016-cipdldshow

  • I have opened a Dropbox for my learning group and maybe this is another option? I save lots of reports, articles and webpage content as PDFs during my research and then leave them in the Dropbox for everyone else. I did ask someone from DPG during a workshop if there was any ability to create a 'resource dump' facility into which people can deposit things for open use. It may be nice to see threads started that contain links but sometimes it is easier/more convenient to check the crowdsourced library (which is what it would be). This is because people who travel a lot should be able to download a PDFof a website or whatever onto their tablet and then read it with no connectivity, thus maximising their study opportunities.

    • Great idea Rob :)

  • My big learning point was just how many companies are focussed on catering for what I call 'the 21st century effect' in that maximising staff productivity and effectiveness is being targeted by 'resilience'. In my previous life I dealt a lot with commercial resilience and contingency planning for organisations. The phrase now extends to making sure staff are not suffering from stress and are happy at work. I am not playing down those factors- but it was interesting that the current surge in 'things on offer' seems to be heaps of psychology, emotional intelligence and what dinosaurs might refer to as touchy-feely management skills. This is all good stuff and focuses back on the workforce as the key resource in productivity rather than purely developing your management team but I hope it will not become a disproportionate trend that distracts from other things that all contribute.

    • A colleague and I both noticed the 'what animal are you' and remarked that it is almost a direct hijack of the Insights Discovery model that gives you a personal colour! It was fun though.

  • The CIPD has published some research at the conference. Here is the press release which includes a link to the data and a good infographic.

    • Martin, I read that article and the infographic is really enlightening. I have referenced some of the findings in my current L5 course work as it is very topical.
