Jonny Anderson and Owen Ferguson join Justin Anderson this week to talk about how they keep up to date with new technology, how they use it and what they think we should be addressing now.

Owen tells us how he just keeps on top of technology, following a pattern of looking a range of sources 2-3 times a week such as techcrunch.com and techmeme.com and looking at what the giants such as Amazon, Google and Netflix are up to. After following what these sources are saying, he really recommends trying things out – having a go is the best way of learning what you like.

They discuss the network effect and how you will never know that tech is going to be successful before it becomes successful. The network effect by definition means “a phenomenon whereby a good or service becomes more valuable when more people use it. The internet is a good example.” (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/n/network-effect.asp) Mass attention leads to success.

The conversation then went on to talk about single sign on (a bunch of services that you can access without having to log in more than once – one of the many things I learnt during this podcast) and how the single sign on is more prevalent now than it has been in the past.

Jonny, Owen and Justin finish the podcast with their best bits of tech, what they love, why they love it and the tricks of the trade.

If the topic of technology interests you, I would recommend this podcast. Listen here!!

For those of who are regular facilitators, we know that things happen that are both within and outside of our control, in the room and out of the room. How we react to these things, how we deal with them and how we think about them afterwards influences who we are and how we do things in the future.

Well what about if your thinking and approaches could translate in to superhero powers?

Well now it can - introducing this fun little questionnaire from Strategic Play Group Ltd

Chunking the article’s learning down into sections and driving my brain power – do you see what I did there? … Well you will once you have had a look at the infographic.

This is a unique, enjoyable and highly productive approach to developing yourself and you’re invited to come along. The events are being organised by L&D Connect, a community of practice for L&D practitioners and others in HR and organisational development. The format of the day is known as an ‘un-conference’ the opposite of a traditional conference event. In essence it means no fixed agenda, no speakers, no pre-determined topics, selling or promotional activity. Instead, it is a space set aside to learn, experiment, network and reflect.

The aims are simple - to create a space to:

Experiment with ideas & techniques with other practitioners - get feedback and think differently about what you produce

Talk about relevant L&D/ OD issues

Exchange ideas and support fellow L&D professionals

Encourage networking & best practice sharing within the learning & development community

The morning commences with everyone working together to identify the key discussion topics and then a variety of discussions on those topics follow throughout the day. The locations for the events are selected based on their comfy, spacious environment, with refreshments on tap and lunch included. You’ll meet a variety of people from a variety of backgrounds and industries and no doubt some lasting friendships and L&D contacts. You really get to help shape your own day and the approach ensures you get the very best customised development for the things that matter to you most.

This time and for the first time ever, the event is being run in multiple locations on the same date in a variety of locations. Some have changed since the podcast below were recorded, but tickets are still available in London, Nottingham and Manchester. Most locations still have a few discounted early bird tickets available at £40 (usually £60) which includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Learning Now TV - December 17th programme

So the holiday season is upon us once again. It has been a great year for Learning Now TV, the online TV channel for L&D professionals.

The programme broadcasts live online each month with access to previously broadcasted programmes from the website when you sign up FREE!

In the last month of 2015 and a little earlier than usual the LNTV programme is packed with L&D issues hosted by Nigel Paine and Kim George. The programme starts at 8.00pm UK time but you can join live at 7.45pm UK time for the pre-programme show with Ady Howes where you can join in the live social stream.

You can't argue with science and the human brain processes visuals faster than text. So if this is the case it makes sense for us to incorporate more visuals and images in our learning materials.

This post and infographic breaks the different types of images down and how they can be used to support content development and increase our learners' engagement

Take a look at the infographic below and head to the post here for more detail

What sort of images do you use in your learning materials - what works for you and what sort of feedback do you get?

The 5 brain tips can be remembered using the mnenomic CRUMMSS:

Micro skills are small things that the learners can learn to do quickly that will give them confidence and enthusiasm to learn more.

By developing some skills that can be implemented immediately, these skills become almost second nature and automatic. This automatic type behaviour can come from a part of the brain that is very low in energy consumption called the basal ganglia, as well as the long-term memory*.

Moving learning quickly into the long-term memory frees up the higher thinking brain for the new learning and gives the learners confidence.

Most of the time a workshop starts with a big picture view of a theory or model, which may be a logical beginning but it could also be quite overwhelming for the learner. Giving them some quick-to-apply new skills can boost their confidence, calm their fears and speed up the learning.

Examples of useful microskills could be:

On an IT course - getting the learners to practice using the help facility so that they can access tips quickly

On a finance course – some really easy calculations that they do in pairs

Health & Safety course – use a spot the difference picture to spot hazards in pairs

An assertiveness course – start off with some simple rapport skills like matching and mirroring

A presentation skills course – practice the introduction of a presentation in a line in stages – name and title, then purpose of presentation, then the outcomes. Build on each stage.
