Jonny Anderson and Owen Ferguson join Justin Anderson this week to talk about how they keep up to date with new technology, how they use it and what they think we should be addressing now.

Owen tells us how he just keeps on top of technology, following a pattern of looking a range of sources 2-3 times a week such as techcrunch.com and techmeme.com and looking at what the giants such as Amazon, Google and Netflix are up to. After following what these sources are saying, he really recommends trying things out – having a go is the best way of learning what you like.

They discuss the network effect and how you will never know that tech is going to be successful before it becomes successful. The network effect by definition means “a phenomenon whereby a good or service becomes more valuable when more people use it. The internet is a good example.” (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/n/network-effect.asp) Mass attention leads to success.

The conversation then went on to talk about single sign on (a bunch of services that you can access without having to log in more than once – one of the many things I learnt during this podcast) and how the single sign on is more prevalent now than it has been in the past.

Jonny, Owen and Justin finish the podcast with their best bits of tech, what they love, why they love it and the tricks of the trade.

If the topic of technology interests you, I would recommend this podcast. Listen here!!

I use Scoop. It which is free for the basic service or for a nominal fee you can upgrade and have more options.

The reason I love it is because you get your own page of articles which is like your own online scrapbook of content - but one you can share. For me, there's lots more benefits. I've listed them here:

1) A great way to collaborate. You're not just gathering and reading content alone and then moving on. You end up having conversations and discussions with friends and colleagues as they pick up your article and 'like' and comment on it.

2) If like me you struggle to read articles and focus on content, then this is a great incentive for searching for stuff, reading thoroughly and forming your own opinions on it. It sort of encourages you knowing that your curated content is going to be viewed by others!

3) It's a useful tool for developing your brand and networking with others. For example, because my curated content also lands on LinkedIN, I have developed some new connections and relationships online.

4) Its great for your CPD! This is something you can add to your CPD record and who knows what else might come from it?

5) As an individual, it helps you to demonstrate you are an L&D Professional that looks beyond your own organisation and keeps abreast of external trends, opinions and practices.

6) You're helping others to develop (and we all love thAT). My colleagues follow my page and it's something they in turn can add to their own CPD record! We also have some great discussions on the back of the content.

If you'd like to view my own curated page to get an idea how it works, it's right here: The Training Cycle. I'd love your comments and thoughts on the content I curate!

For anyone, that wants to have a go at content curation, I use Scoop it! but I am sure there are lots of other services out there too. I highly recommend having a go at it - for all the reasons above. Maybe we could all share our curated pages along with any good free curation services we know of.

Happy curating.....

Richard

Short course on handling difficult conversationshttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/learning-professionals/short-course-on-handling-difficult-conversations2016-10-11T10:17:43.000Z2016-10-11T10:17:43.000ZVicky Gallagherhttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/VickyGallagher

Hi, I'm looking for a 1/2 day or 1 day course on how to handle difficult conversations in the workplace.

Simon introduced us to the Virtual Specsavers World, their fantastic induction lesson for new starters.

This virtual world is filled with information about Specsavers so that when new starters arrive on their first day, they already have an insight into the vision of the company and an idea what life will be like working there.

Specsavers has introduced a charity area on the induction so that new starters can feel involved right from the start with a donation to one of Specsavers chosen charities. This donation works as a token (you may have seen a similar idea in Waitrose) a user choses a charity and Specsavers donate the money on their behalf, Simon explained this is one of the key values of the company. A lovely personal touch if you ask me.

Simon explained that because the target audience can be so varied, a none linear process was key to making every individuals experience slightly different and as engaging as possible. He also demonstrated how video is used to make the introduction feel personal.

This induction has worked a charm, as 92% of people said the registration process was easy and 86% said it was useful.

Simon ended the session with a helpful tip… think about your user and how you want to engage with them. Robust thinking is key to knowing what your aim is, and knowing how to achieve it.

What are your thoughts on online inductions? Have you ever been on or created a really successful induction? I’d love to find out more about your experience so please comment below.

I am currently taking the L3 L&D diploma. And, as a newcomer, I thought it time to get my feet wet with a 'good' question. I was surfing LinkedIn jobs and a few other sites looking for possible careers for my L&D future. (Currently, I am a secondary teacher and am looking to make the switch from public to private sector.) I have been searching but finding very conflicting titles with conflicting outcomes as to what is required of a certain role. It almost seems that particular companies just make up titles. What have I seen: L&D Business Partner, Adviser, Professional, Manager, Consultant, Officer, Associate, Administrator, Training & Development with all of the previous second titles. I could also include 'Learning' without the development but with all the second titles.

Is there any hierarchy of positions? Which is at the top (pay & responsibility wise)? Bottom?
