You can read the post here.

Clark frames his thinking using the book Make it Stick, The Science of Successful Learning by Peter Brown and makes a powerful argument for using social media for learning.

This resonates for me as I use tools such as Twitter to help me connect with people and ideas. I also participate in Twitter chats to help me reflect and discuss ideas. Social media is hugely important for my personal and professional development.

I'm interested to hear how you are using social media to learn - if you are, so please let me know your thoughts. And if you aren't, what's stopping you?

PS I bought the book Clark mentions so will share my highlights once I've read it.

URGENT – Social Experiment for our coursehttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/learning-professionals/urgent-social-experiment-for-our-course2016-02-01T09:53:22.000Z2016-02-01T09:53:22.000ZDebbie Makinhttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/Debbie

Hi Everyone,

How are you using Social Media for interactive learning?https://community.dpgplc.co.uk/learning-professionals/how-are-you-using-social-media-for-interactive-learning2014-09-15T16:36:39.000Z2014-09-15T16:36:39.000ZMike Collinshttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/MikeCollins

Last week I attended a tweet chat hosted by the #LDinsight team (L&D Connect) to support an INSPIRE session being run at Learning Live.

This is a weekly online chat hosted by fellow L&D professionals focusing on key topics in L&D and runs at 8-9am every Friday.

For those people who have never attended a Tweet Chat or aren't on Twitter this probably sounds like a very strange thing but it's a great example of using Social Media to connect and learn from others.

So what happens?

People from around the world communicate via Twitter using 140 characters and a # (hashtag) in this case #LDinsight and answer questions that the host posts.

There are different formats such as asking a different question every 10 minutes or just chatting around a topic generally for an hour. Either way they are open to anyone who wants to join in and anyone can search the #hashtag and see what has been discussed.

They are great to help you build up your network and connect with those in your field.

Once the chat has finished you can curate and save any tweets and post them in a Storify for example and then share with the world, or in this case the DPG Community :-)

I've embedded the Storify from last weeks chat below and I'd love to know from you the same question.

How are you using Social Media for interactive learning?

10 Social Media Personality Types - Which One Are You?https://community.dpgplc.co.uk/learning-professionals/10-social-media-personality-types-which-one-are-you2014-03-20T14:14:34.000Z2014-03-20T14:14:34.000ZMike Collinshttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/MikeCollins

The DPG Community will be 2 yrs old in July and in this time it's been so interesting seeing how different people interact with this community of practice (which is a social network).

Like any new tool or technology it can be overwhelming at first and I'll be the first to admit there is A LOT of content on the home page and it takes a little time to find your way around. It's something we're looking at for the next version.

However like anything, the more you use something the easier it gets and if you choose to engage with the community and use it to it's full potential then you'll be up to speed in no time and you will have such a different experience than if you choose not to engage.

So what makes someone engage and get involved in group discussions or blogs, posting videos and links and sharing what they are doing for others to learn from?

On the other hand what makes someone not want to engage (even though the benefits are there to see)?

I'm fascinated by human behaviour, especially in such a connected world where social tools have redefined and redesigned how we communicate globally.

Is it confidence, trust, nervousness, anxiety, privacy concerns........what stops someone uploading a profile picture? Even any sort of picture to put some sort of identity on their profile.

We of course have the 'Top Collaborators' so you can see who does contribute on a regular basis and I wonder what makes these people contribute where others don't and why.

There is a 'rule' around social networks/communities that is called the 90/9/1 rule.

Its means

90% of people will lurk and read

9% will contribute and get involved at times

1% will generate most content - the 'power user'

It's interesting as applying this rule to this community you can see that this is kind of the case....we have a lot of people in the community (2227) but still a relatively small number of people who get involved in the main area and continually contribute.

Joss Anderson sent me something earlier today that made me think of this and is why I'm posting it is in this context as I think your social media personality is linked to using tools like the DPG Community.

So let's find out - take a look at the picture below (click to enlarge it) and take a look at the different types of personality. Simple question, which one are you?

What questions do you have about Twitter?https://community.dpgplc.co.uk/learning-professionals/what-questions-do-you-have-about-twitter2014-02-18T10:01:40.000Z2014-02-18T10:01:40.000ZAdy Howeshttps://community.dpgplc.co.uk/members/AdyHowes

What questions do you have about Twitter???

Many people say that Twitter isn't about what you had for breakfast. For me it often is! You can often find ramblings on my personal interactions with life on Twitter. But fortunately, it's grown to be a lot more than just my insignificant ramblings! Today, for me, it's a professional development tool, a great research vehicle, a fine way of reaching out to some very clever, relevant people that ordinarily I wouldn't have had the opportunity to speak with. It's been of massive help to me in my development.

Twitter can be as simple, or as complex in what it brings to you as you like, but either way, it's really easy to learn.

So my question to you is what questions do you have about Twitter?

Let me know below and I'll see how I can help.
