Hi All.
With begging cap in my hand, I'm asking for some help here! I'm doing some work at the moment, which is really going to involve me selling, yep selling, the idea of community based learning. I need to uncover the truth behind why sharing knowledge in our organisations is just so important and how building communities, like this DPG one, are helpful.
You may well be, like myself, a huge fan of the DPG community in terms of your professional development and studying. So my question to you as I do my research bit, ready for my sales pitch to follow...
What is it about communities that makes you a fan?
Why is community building in this way, sharing knowledge in our organisations, a good thing to grasp hold of?
Your comments are most appreciated.
Thanks loads.

HI Sorina.
Thanks for your thoughts. Much appreciated.
I love your blend of ingredients there and I think you're spot on with it being not just one particular thing. For me it's access to the community in the first place that I really value. I love the fact that there's a whole load of like minded people on here that not only am I finding useful in terms of my studies, but just generally in my day to day work life. When you think of the old cliche a problem shared is a problem halved, that's great analogy for what's happening here. You have a particular HRD related issue you're trying to solve and when you jump on here and ask, there's always someone that's either got that same issue too, or even has been there before and can offer their advise. And when the conversations really get going, it's not just a problem halved, it's a problem dissected into really small pieces! I've often described the DPG community as being a place where you have access to 100's of mentors!
Like yourself Sorina, I also only tend to be a fan of communities that work well and this one certainly does. Those other elements that you mention around the commitment of the community facilitators, the rewards that are present are certainly important ingredients too.
One of the other points you mention is key. The topics that are raised by it's members. I often wonder what new topics should be raised on here?
Hi Ady,
It is not just one particular ingredient that makes a community works. From my past and present experience with e-learning and on-line communities like this one I can tell that, and I am speaking for myself, what makes a difference between another on-line community and an excellent one, that offers a real learning experience and a positive and pro-active space for sharing knowledge, is:
What is it about communities that makes you a fan?
I am not a fan of many communities but definitely I am a fan of DPG community for all the reasons mentioned above. This community seams to know how to challenge its members and, for me, this is the most important thing.
Why is community building in this way, sharing knowledge in our organisations, a good thing to grasp hold of?
Not everybody can share his/her knowledge, but in today's world, progress is based on sharing and receiving knowledge, excellent ideas and solutions don't come just from one single person.
Hope this helps.
