As learning at work week is in full swing, I took some time out this afternoon to listen to the @GoodPractice podcast about new technology. Jonny Anderson and Owen Ferguson join Justin Anderson this week to talk about how they keep up to date with new technology, how they use it and what they think we should be addressing now.

Owen tells us how he just keeps on top of technology, following a pattern of looking a range of sources 2-3 times a week such as techcrunch.com and techmeme.com and looking at what the giants such as Amazon, Google and Netflix are up to. After following what these sources are saying, he really recommends trying things out – having a go is the best way of learning what you like.

They discuss the network effect and how you will never know that tech is going to be successful before it becomes successful. The network effect by definition means “a phenomenon whereby a good or service becomes more valuable when more people use it. The internet is a good example.” (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/n/network-effect.asp) Mass attention leads to success.

The conversation then went on to talk about single sign on (a bunch of services that you can access without having to log in more than once – one of the many things I learnt during this podcast) and how the single sign on is more prevalent now than it has been in the past.

Jonny, Owen and Justin finish the podcast with their best bits of tech, what they love, why they love it and the tricks of the trade.

If the topic of technology interests you, I would recommend this podcast. Listen here!!

  • Thanks for sharing Lucy.

It's one of the biggest challenges for L&D right now,  and can cause a lot of stress knowing what system to choose, implement etc.

I believe another good way is for L&D to talk to marketing and sales to see what technology is being used, especially around communication within the business and automation of this.

  • Hi Lucy,

It's a really good question and thanks for the podcast tip. In my day job I work in a solutions role for a workplace learning technology company. Although we're always looking ahead to 'the next big thing', be that Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Next Gen platforms or something else, the starting point is what's right for your learners and what's the best fit for what you're trying to achieve with digital learning offer. I think the learning tech world can often be overwhelming - there are a lot of suppliers offering very similar products and services, some of which are very good and some of which you probably don't need. I find this image from Bersin really useful in terms of starting the conversation as to where you are on the learning tech scale right now and where you'd like to get to as a business.2899346?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

    • Hi Hannah, thanks for sharing this image, it's great, really good way to see how tech has progressed. I agree that the learning tech world is overwhelming, there's always something new to try and it is difficult to keep up to date with the new trends, but as you say -  learners needs come first!!
