During the weekly #LDInsight chat on Twitter, an interesting conversation that caught my eye started unfolding. The question on this particular week was asking us to consider the question:

What are you glad to have done in 2017

One of the replies was from a guy called Michael Osborne, Mike Ozzy on Twitter (Hi Mike)....

He was talking about some of the progress he'd made developing his knowledge of marketing. That caught my eye. I've been doing some of that this year too. Specifically, I've been looking at some of the work done by our friends in marketing and how this can be applied to learning. For example, we know that marketeers are getting pretty good at tailoring marketing and personalising based on what they know about people. Surely, this has some legs when it comes to personalising the journey of our learners too.

Mike and I got chatting about this and within a short space of time, we realised that many other people were also interested in the topic of marketing and it's relevance to L& D. In addition, interestingly one of our friends, Niall Gavin (Hi Niall!) had already been working with a group of apprentices looking at marketing. Naturally he was also interested in the discussion on behalf of his group.

So, we arranged a Twitter chat that took place this week. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend due to prior commitments, but I've found this Storify and summary of the chat a useful way to catch up. I thought I'd share it with you too.

This particular chat was looking at the relevance of social media and how it is used in marketing and it's application to L& D. I wouldn't be surprised if more chats like this come up in the future.

I'm interested in your views on this.....

How do you think we can learn in L&D from the work done by our colleagues in marketing? What do they do, that might be beneficial to us?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.
