Onboarding New Employees

I am currently doing some pre-tender research into onboarding programmes for New Employees. I know there is a lot of online tools that can support this but looking for a blended approach.  Once I have completed my reasearch I will be looking to put out a tender for this work for a partner company to design and deliver this programme. Has anyone got any recommendations or worked with any partners who have done something similar?

  • Hi Karen,

I agree with Mike. On-boarding is an integral part to employee engagement. So often we hear of people’s introduction in to the workplace as solely task related, which can sometimes disengage people from the culture of the organisation and in turn impacts motivation, loyalty and ultimately staff retention rate.

I carried out some research from my division some years ago, and found that quite often new starters are so nervous to join a new company/team, that they’ll be afraid to ask ‘non-work’ related questions about the company and instead research in their own time.

Researching a company beforehand is naturally advised as part of your interview preparation, however learning about a company’s culture, ethos and people agenda is far better when interacting with someone who lives and breathes it as opposed to reading an article on the website.

Therefore, when I designed our On-boarding programme, I used a variety of methods, from day one information pack, buddy 1:1 systems, company history videos, meets and greets with senior team and key stakeholders and closed workshops (for multiple recruits). The primary aim was to educate on culture and the companies purpose before going into any task training.

I haven’t used an external body, but like Mike has commented on Sky, I have also heard about Virgin having a fab programme.

Good luck – if you need any help, happy to assist.

    Thanks

  • I'd be really keen to hear what sort of experience you want from your onboarding approach Karen? It's a really important part of the employee lifecycle and sets the tone for the journey ahead.

Sky won some awards a couple of years ago for their onboarding approach. I know we don't all have the budgets that they do but I'm sure there are some things you could learn from the approach. here is a case study to bring it to life
