Today’s session was brought to us by Simon Poole-Anderson from Specsavers. Simon introduced us to the Virtual Specsavers World, their fantastic induction lesson for new starters.

This virtual world is filled with information about Specsavers so that when new starters arrive on their first day, they already have an insight into the vision of the company and an idea what life will be like working there.

Specsavers has introduced a charity area on the induction so that new starters can feel involved right from the start with a donation to one of Specsavers chosen charities. This donation works as a token (you may have seen a similar idea in Waitrose) a user choses a charity and Specsavers donate the money on their behalf, Simon explained this is one of the key values of the company. A lovely personal touch if you ask me.

Simon explained that because the target audience can be so varied, a none linear process was key to making every individuals experience slightly different and as engaging as possible.  He also demonstrated how video is used to make the introduction feel personal.

This induction has worked a charm, as 92% of people said the registration process was easy and 86% said it was useful.

Simon ended the session with a helpful tip… think about your user and how you want to engage with them. Robust thinking is key to knowing what your aim is, and knowing how to achieve it.

What are your thoughts on online inductions? Have you ever been on or created a really successful induction? I’d love to find out more about your experience so please comment below.
