Hi all
I am begining to design a 3 hr training session on the basics of HR for supervisors.
The intention is to cover, with quite a broad brush:
- Job descriptions
- Conducting interviews - good and bad practice
- Inductions and appraisals - why we do them
- Disciplinaries and grievances - rules and processes
- Dismissals - redundancy
- Discrimination, bullying and harrassment
Has anyone else had to run anything similar and if so, what sort of things did you include to keep it interactive and engaging?
I have some ideas, such as using some scripts for differing scenarios, but wondered if anyone else had other ideas before I got too fully immersed in the project!

Hi Lisa
As Mike mentioned 3 hours is quite a challenge. What might help is to tighten up what you REALLY need them to do or know (or be):
For example by the end of the workshop they will be able to:
etc etc
If you look at the objectives, then these are all measurable. So figuring out exactly what they need to know, be able to do or be if crucial before you start to include all the different topics.
When writing objectives avoid the use of the following words:
none of the above are measurable and so would not be good objectives.
If you are struggling with this then go back to the stakeholders who gave you the 3.5 hours and ask them "What do the supervisors really need to be be able to do and to what level?"
Keep asking them until you know if they just need to regurgitate stuff or if they need to apply it. The lower the level of knowledge the less time it will take. If they need to develop skills then you could probably just tackle a couple of the topics listed in 3.5 hours.
Hope this helps

P.S. If you have come across Blooms Taxonomy then that may help. I would attach a handout but cannot see anywhere to attach it!
Hi Lisa,
I'd definitely check out the CIPD's fact sheets as a starting point and also well worth referring to the ACAS website for material to refer to. ACAS also do short training courses that might be worth looking at.
With you only having 3 hrs it's going to be difficult to get in to detail with so much to cover but I think your approach is spot on. By using real life and relevant scenarios based on the things your supervisors are likely to come up against will enable them to think through how they would approach them, the things they would do and how they would ensure they have done the correct things in line with your own company policy.
Maybe think about setting them some pre-work i.e the scenarios so they can come to the workshop ready to discuss them and get the most of the time together. Sharing how they would each approach them and coming up with the 'right' approach so they are all clear.
Good luck!
Thanks Mike!
