What questions do you have about Twitter???

Many people say that Twitter isn't about what you had for breakfast.  For me it often is!  You can often find ramblings on my personal interactions with life on Twitter.  But fortunately, it's grown to be a lot more than just my insignificant ramblings!  Today, for me, it's a professional development tool, a great research vehicle, a fine way of reaching out to some very clever, relevant people that ordinarily I wouldn't have had the opportunity to speak with. It's been of massive help to me in my development.

Twitter can be as simple, or as complex in what it brings to you as you like, but either way, it's really easy to learn.

So my question to you is what questions do you have about Twitter?

Let me know below and I'll see how I can help.

Thanks

  • Hi Les

I agree that's it's so fast and there is much dross too! For these reasons I tend to find that if I do have a browse through my timeline there's only so far that I will scroll back. Sometimes there is something that catches my eye, often there is not.

What I've therefore found myself doing is spending less time in the timeline view and more time in the search side of Twitter. This way I get to find what people are saying right now about a particular story, industry, product or article that I'm interested in. I hear lists work well for this purpose but as of yet I haven't figured those out yet.

Does this article on searching on Twitter help?

    • I tried to set up some useful lists, to group tweets from specific contacts, but failed at the first hurdle as I don't seem to have a "new list" button! Typical. ("rolls eyes" emoticon to be inserted but I don't know where to find them either!)

      • Hi Alison, the standard twitter app won't let you create new lists. If you get yourself Hootsuite the you can create lists to your hearts content.

        • Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled.

Mike has been helping me (live) on Twitter regarding who to follow - hurrah- the tweeting world has suddenly become immensely interesting. (when will I ever find time to work? haha!)

I have also found that on the pc I can create lists, so now have several in use. I found some great info online that really helped with lists, but try as I might, I couldn't save the links to evernote...that is my next challenge to figure evernote out so it works every time (not just occasionally).

Thanks Phil for the tip about Hootsuite - guess I need that on the iPad now.

    • Thanks Ady, I'll give that a go.

I'd used groups but that simply restricted the pool of people I already knew/followed.

What is your view on value (given that 'provenance' is trumped by volume on Twitter) compared to just doing a Google search (which does at least have the virtue of some form of ranking of sites)?

My feeling at this point is that Twitter may offer 'another perspective' and is another avenue to explore given that the other person (group, organisation) might have been selective in how they promote their view.  What do you think?

      • Hi Les

I am going to jump on to Ady's discussion as I am a huge twitter fan. Yes there is a lot of stuff on twitter and you need to be selective about who you (un)follow. If you find someone... you think they look interesting and so follow... They turn out to tweet stuff you aren't interested in.... Unfollow and quickly. As a fairly active twitter user I am happy when I lose followers as that means they are finding the content they want, and it wasn't mine. That's ok with me.

Secondly, there are often 'tweet chats' that take place where a group of people into a particular thing will be on line at a certain date and time and (often one person) will curate the chat posting questions etc. Everyone will also use a particular # for example #NZlead I'm into hr and L&D stuff and two of my favourites are:

#NZlead curated by the amazing Tash Pieterse @tashtasticNZ and Amanda Sterling @sterling_amanda from New Zealand

#ldinsight curated by the brilliant and so supportive David Goddin @changecontinuum and @lndconnect

Search twitter for those hashtags and you will find the discussions from the week just gone which will also tell you the dates and times.

Also, comparing twitter with a google search may not be a fair thing as they are very different tools.

When you start to get into blogging let me know as that is another amazing avenue to find great content.

Finally, on the volume thing... I find great content will always find its way into my twitter feed. If the content is strong, it will be retweeted and I will find it.

        Hope that helps

        Phil
        • Thanks, Phil - that's very interesting stuff!

          Les.

          • Hi Gents

Great discussion.  Les you make a really important point around this being another avenue.  I totatlly agree.  Whilst I'm clearly a huge fan of Twitter, I tend not to put too many eggs in one basket.  I see all these different social media, internet tools as "channels" of information.  Just like I would select a channel on TV for what my needs are at the time (relaxing, humour, information, sporting fix etc) I select channels on the internet most appropriate for my needs.

From a business perspective there are some that I don't really like using (Facebook for me personally), some that I think are a must (DPG Community and Linked In) and some that seem to tick my social and business box and are a hybrid of both (Twitter).

Selecting the right channel for your needs I believe is massively important.

Phil - Your comments on being selective on who you (un)follow I think are important too.  After all, our needs change over time based on what we're working on, what we're looking for etc.  So who I follow tends to occasionally get re-organised to suit this so that I get a good timeline view based on what I need.

  • Hi Ady,

I find that there is a lot of saying and not much listening on Twitter.  It is so fast that it's easy to miss stuff and hence enter into a dialogue.  Lots of people are promoting but few comment and engage.

This might be my fault for not having anything worth saying or listening to but finding relevant messages on Twitter amongst the whole mass of tweets has not proved a good use of my time so far.  Unless there was some filter for the dross (other than unfollowing - how much time do you give them to prove themselves worth keeping?) and some way to identify quality tweets then for me it has a very low ROI at present.

Your perspective would be helpful in case I am missing something - thanks.

  • Hi Alison,

Here's another one for you.  I wish my assignments were as quick to put together!

This one is on how to decide who to follow on Twitter:
