What's Hot in L&D in 2017?

This morning we joined Donald Taylor and the Learning and Skills Group on a webinar to look at the outputs of their annual survey on L&D trends. Here's how it was summed up and what's in store for us in 2017.

1 - Personalisation and Social

Personalisation has remained a hot topic for the past two years claiming the number 2 spot in the annual trends survey. In the same period collaborative and social learning has been the leading predicted trend at number 1. This year has seen these two switch around. Commenting on this, Don suggested that this was because social and collaborative learning has become a 'business as usual' activity with more L&D departments including that into the mix as 'standard'. Technology and algorithms were sighted as the drives for more personalisation. We can expect learners will expect even more personalisation in both content choice and content delivery.

2 - Technology Tussles

Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence were all highlighted trending hot topics as around the world interest in these areas grows. There was a lot of focus in the session on Micro Learning starting with the very basic question 'What is it?'. It was interesting to see that whilst around the world, there has been an increase in the interest in this topic, in the USA this has declined. You can read more on this discussion with Kathryn Miller on on whether Micro Learning is the same old or revolutionary.

3 - Business Value

I was not at all surprised to hear that L&D wants to consult and show value given that we must continually demonstrate the return on investment and expectation on what we deliver. As the slide says, success rests on skills and mindset and there is a need to ensure L&D develops. Surprisingly, only 5% of those voting for showing value as a trend also voted for developing the L&D function. Perhaps this is another focus that has become business as usual or perhaps there's more we need to do to develop.

Are you doing enough to develop yourself and your teams?

What do you think to these trends?

Are they what you expect or are there others you think that should be more prominent.

Interested to hear your thoughts.
