Today is World Mental Health Day. So what better time to discuss such an important topic?
In the UK, we are fortunate to have a reasonably developed understanding of how important this issue is.
For example, the government has taken the step of appointing the first ever suicide prevention minister. And high-profile figures, from Clarke Carlilse to Ruby Wax, are drawing attention to the issue, bringing it into the public consciousness.
In short, it is being talked about, which is a big thing.
However, there is much more to be done. For example, 4500 people a year fall victim to suicide. Also, according to the Institute of Directors, over half of British employers have been approached by staff suffering from mental health problems.
What can be done to reduce the suicide rate? What can be done to tackle mental health problems?
Regarding the latter, I have my own methods. I read, watch comedies, go for walks by the canal and confide in people I trust. I feel I now have a good portfolio of methods to keep on the right side of healthy.
