Level 3 completed:)

Hellooo

Well, I found out yesterday I passed my ninth and final assessment for HR Level 3.  It really has been a very rewarding experience for me.  I also achieved the role I wanted at work which was the role of People Development Manager, so, really, my learning has just begun.

I am looking forward to applying for my associate member status with the CIPD and all this is down to DPG.  So a huge Thank you.

Since taking on my role of People Development Manager (it hasn't been long), I came across for the first time negativity that as a woman and a mother I am entering into a full-time role.  Not from my colleagues I hasten to add but perhaps more disappointingly from a good friend!

When I told my friend the good news, her first reaction was, what about the children, what about the long hours?  It made me think of an article in the People Management Magazine that I had read.  For a Man it is good to be ambitious for a Woman its just viewed as a bad thing.

I think being a mother actually adds to my experiences it brings in a different mind-set and adds to the diversity of the workplace.  A company cannot evolve and develop with like minded people from the same backgrounds with shared life experiences.

I advised my good friend that actually working towards a promising and full career can only be a good thing in the long term.  I have the support of my husband, my children can grow up seeing two parents working in careers they both enjoy and that can only be a good thing.

That's it for now :)

  • Thank you Phil.  Jen

  • Hi Jen,

Thanks for the blog and well done again on completing the packs etc, you have done really well.

After reading your post and Sarah's reply/blog I was reminded of this TEDx talk that was done by a great friend of mine last year.

    Happy watching

  • Well Done Jen! Excellent news!

A happy and fulfilled Mom, whether she stays at home or goes to work, is the best Mom a child can have!

  • Wow, times flies Jennifer and congratulations on passing your Certificate in HRP. It's a great feeling (I remember it well) and it's been fab reading about your journey, thank-you for sharing it with us. It's so rewarding to read success stories and hearing people progress and achieving their goals - well done on the new role and providing inspiration for others :)

Really pleased you'll be joining us again in Spring and I look forward to following the next installments of your journey.

    Stay in touch :)

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank you.  Yes, I hope to start my Level 5 in April.  I will check your article out, I agree it is about parents (men and women).  Flexibility is certainly key moving forward, I do wonder if part of the problem with the lack of women stepping up is the negative reactions that they face coming from people that are considered to be part of their support network.  Still, it takes people like you who are showing others that it can be done.  Make it easier for people in my position to make informed career decisions with confidence.

  • Hi Jennifer,

Firstly, congratulations on passing your Cert HRP, this is a great achievement! I believe you are also going to complete the Level 5 Diploma too which is fantastic. I read your post with real interest as I've just written a piece on this very subject that you can check out at:

Career or Mum - it shouldn't be a choice

I think we read the same People Management article :-)

I know exactly where you're coming from. I too had comments like, are you going to give up work now then?, Surely, you're not going back as Co-MD...guess you'll need to look for something less taxing and part-time...and so on.

Working parents (not just women) need flexibility and with a more forward looking approach organisations can support the differing needs and aspirations of their staff. I definitely think being a working parent enables you to bring something extra to the workplace. If nothing else the ability to remain calm under pressure is one of them...!

So you keep going, sounds like you're doing fantastically well and being a superb role model at the same time!

    Best of luck,

    Sarah
