I have heard that the key to successful management is understanding yourself, understanding other people and combining those two so that you can work out an approach that will create a constructive relationship between manager and managed.

If these relationships existed in isolation then we might have more successful managers, but there are so many other factors that can impact how managers and managed interact. It is not surprising that managers make so many mistakes when trying to manage how the people and the external factors interact. No two interactions that are the same.

Every employee has it deep within themselves to become a difficult employee!

  • Speak to someone you manage in the wrong way – in that person’s opinion – and you could get slapped with a claim for harassment that ends up with a tribunal hearing or a civil law suit.
  • Hire someone who unbeknown to you has a history of violence, they lash out at someone and you are blamed for offering them a job, saying they seemed so nice at interview just isn’t a defence.
  • You just don’t understand the implications of the medical information that an employee has given you and ask them to do something that their condition means they shouldn’t, and you end up in trouble.

Looking at how complex the role of manager has become it is perhaps not surprising that managers are struggling to keep up with the vast range of internal and external rules and regulations that they need to keep up to date with.

Knowing the rules and regulations is just a small part of the challenge, when the situation arises the manager needs to be competent in what they need to do in an ever increasingly wide range of different situations.
