  • Hi Alice,

Great share thank you. I'll certainly be watching this.

I'm interested in finding out what caught your eye with it, what did you find useful and how it's helped you in the work you do? Please do pop back and share your thoughts ;-)

    • Hi Gary,

While looking for studies around conflict resolution one referenced the book 'getting to yes'. having read it and watched the video i shared it is definitely an interesting perspective on how we negotiate and come to agreement. I always thought haggling was the smart way to negotiate but this gave me pause for thought; do we actually get what we want by sticking to traditional positional arguments? Are we being truly objective when considering our desired long term outcomes?

If nothing else this has already made me think more carefully before talking when trying to reach agreement. I think everyone can be guilty of 'listening while waiting to put our point across' rather than 'listening to understand'. I myself will be working harder to truly listen in negotiation.

I also really loved the idea that the harder I negotiate on an objective point, the softer I will be on the person I'm negotiating with.  I've seen people do this before and respected their approach but couldn't quite put my finger on why I liked it-now I understand they were being objective, and taking the 'person out of the argument'.

      Alice
