Group Induction - Facebook getting to know you

My daughter has just started working for BT in Warrington and on her first day she rang me to tell me all about her new group and what they had been up to.

They had spent the day after introductions designing their own Facebook page on the Intranet:

The requirement was a status - how were they feeling about their first day

Photos - transferred from their mobilies

And then all about themselves - favourite films etc

In the afternoon they had then presented to each other and had the opportunity to ask questions.

Although there were 15 in the group, my daughter remembered and spoke animatedly about all the people and could remember half a dozen facts about each one which I know as the week has progressed has already formed friendships and common ground with these people.

It was lovely to see her so engaged with her surrounding and her team and I know that because of that I will pinch this as an idea.

  • This is really interesting to know that social networks are really becoming a part of companies, as sites like facebook and twitter were frowned upon in a working envirment, it just goes to show how much times are changing.

  • That was really interesting Adam thanks.

  • This is great- Thanks for sharing Sarah! Check out this example out http://admorerecruitment.wordpress.com/2013/02/28/are-tesco-leading...

It's shows how Tesco uses Twitter to keep in touch with their people.

  • What a great example of using social in a positive way and should be applauded in terms of BT using this to help the induction process and build relationships. They must have an internal network within BT and all get a profile page which they've designed together and used to learn about each other.

This is exactly the sort of thing our vision is in using this community to support learning and helping our groups build connections with each other the wider community. It feels very foreign for some and it is hard to get people to engage but that's it we're all people, we're social animals and this is being encouraged in BT the workplace and in this community as we are using social tools to help people connect with content, facilitators and each other in a more fun, open and social way.

What I like about it is it is getting your daughter to interact with it straight way in a positive manner and take away the fear factor of what it is and how it can be used positively to build connections and find things of interest. Inductions can be a difficult experience well done BT and it's great to hear your daughter having such a positive experience. Thanks for sharing.

Anyone know of anywhere else doing this sort of thing and using it is a positive way?
