How to demonstrate the value of learning?

How to demonstrate the value of learning?

How to demonstrate the value of learning? How many times in your career have you felt that learning you have arranged has been a waste of your time? How many times have you seen your employees with heavy eyelids after sessions, their shoulders sagging as the leave the room?

Worst of all is this: how can you quantify the tangible benefits to your organisation after the session has completed?

You could read these tips, I suppose on how to demonstrate the value of learning.

  1. Define your desired results

If you don’t define the highest-level result that you want from learning, you won’t be able to measure the success of it. That just wouldn’t be very good at all, would it?

Define your desired results from the start, and the methods and behaviours needed to accomplish them will follow.

  1. P R A C T I C E

My cat has learnt certain things through perseverance. Establishing a pattern of reinforcement means that my opulent Indian rug hasn’t been chewed or clawed. Encourage your cats to use what they’ve learnt (and stop them chewing your lovely furnishings).

In other words: don’t let the learning exist in isolation, with no follow-up, or analysis.

Ensure that learning is effective beyond the session itself by encouraging reinforcement of the methods learned.

  1. Gimme Data

As you can imagine, it’s important to capture response data from participants to measure engagement and learning. However, some can be reluctant to answer formal surveys, the cheeky devils. According to James and Wendy Kirkpatrick, “response rates tend to be low [in e-surveys], and there is a limit to the types of information that can be gathered”.

Why not be Mr Holmes, and do some personal investigation?

Ask questions of participants in person and you’ll get a better response. Forms longer than my commute are tedious for people to fill in AND for you to make.

Despite my tomfoolery, I think you’ll find these methods useful. May I cheekily suggest that you check out our Kirkpatrick programme?

The tips above were taken from the contents of the programme, which is designed to help you evaluate (and get the best out of) learning sessions. DPG is the only provider of the course in the UK, so you’ll be getting a unique qualification that’ll give you strategic advantage over the competition.

Have a look at the programme here, and get in touch on 0333 230 4412 if you have any queries. We’re ever so nice at DPG, and love answering questions about our offer! Also, have a look at the Kirkpatrick website here.
