Time for the big text cull

Being new to the HR community, I was initially concerned that my coursework would be lacking essential insight and knowledge and that I would struggle to meet the word count requirements. Oh how wrong I was!

Upon completing my first SYK pack, imagine my horror when I realised it contains over 2,200 words, not including index and appendices.  That's 700 words surplus to requirement.  It's times like these that I am eternally grateful that my grandmother was an English grammar teacher and that I was taught the essential skills of reducing reports into clear and concise language.

What I have learned today:  I must be more stringent with my own children about grammar and context so they can finely hone their own word-culling skills for when they need them in future.

  • It's been a while since I wrote an essay, but I'm always giving my colleagues a hard time about writing in Plain English. It definitely helps to reduce word counts. The best tool I've seen for that is wordpress. It has the strictest text analysis on Earth.

  • Well, I still have another 100 words to go (down from 700, so that's going well!) but when I've finished I'll try to find time to add some insight.

  • Hi Jess, thanks for sharing as I'm sure it's something that a lot of people have a challenge with. I'm not sure if you saw Joss Andersons blog called Know Your Limits but it's on this very subject.

    Know your limits

I know you're busy chopping and word culling but it would be great if you could share some of the ways you've culled as it might help others in the same position
