Too old for an NUS Card?

So I find myself in a shop where I can utilise my new NUS card and suddenly feel very conscious about using it! I start thinking about how are they going to perceive this. What is she doing with this, she's too old are all thoughts that start going through my head to the point that I feel very anxious about it and nervous that I am doing something wrong. My husband of course thinks its wonderful as we are in a shop that he benefits from the discount and tells me I am being silly.

Anyway I handed it over with a polite "Is it ok to use this in here" and she said Yes of course and was very lovely about it. I didn't really have a question to this just wanted to share with you all and wondered if I was the only one who had felt like this (probably!!)

  • There's a useful option on Amazon as well. If you enter the code from the NUS site when you place an order, Amazon will apply the discount on every future order you make through them as well. Note that the discount doesn't apply to all items purchased though - seems to be mainly those that are supplied direct from them rather than through a third party.

  • Oh and by the way.. I was told last weekend that Staples ( the stationery suppliers) are no longer accepting NUS cards after January - so stock up quick if you use them for folders etc.

  • Aww Rachel, i totally understand that feeling but really you should be wielding the card with pride!  As Steve says you have the right to use it & reap the benefits after all the hard work we put in to completing the course.

Learning at any age is great & should be applauded, so don't be embarassed.  The NUS card is a symbol of your learning if anything :)

If it makes you feel any better, my dad retired a few years ago (so is a lot older than you!) & started learning Spanish through his local college & got a student card that he sheepishly whips out occasionally but no-one ever questions him on it...

Steve - gutted for you it wasn't accepted at weekend but always worth a try!

  • Not at all Rachel. I feel like it every time I use the card - and I'm a fair few years older of course!  Never been questioned about it by any shop staff.

I did manage to embarrass my family recently by proudly announcing to the waiter in Pizza Hut recently that I'd be using my NUS card to get a discount on the meal - only to be told politely that it isn't valid at weekends!

Enjoy using the card - you've every right to hold it, so make the most of it! :-)
