iPad's

Hi All,

I am doing some research regarding the use of iPad's in a learning environment within organistions so am interested to hear the following;

- Does anyone use iPad's in a Training / Classroom Environment

- If so, what for?

- Are they a useful addition to the training?

Thanks for input!

  • Hi Amy  One of our external trainers uses them to enable participants in Resilience Workshops to see the real-time positive effects of mindfulness and breathing techniques on their autonomic nervous system.  This is done by a clip-on sensor and dial-in to a specialist app which shows variations in heart rates and rhythm.  It certainly helped to win over some of the sceptics when they saw harsh, jagged lines turn into smooth curves as they altered their breathing and mental imaging.

  • Hi Amy,

    We use iPad to virtually train our store based staff on a wider scale when I do not have the L&D resource to get to every store team. We download to the Prezi app and they can watch the latest piece of info.

    Its fun and different.

    Thanks

  • Hi Amy,

    A really specific example of their use in Vodafone - we've actually used them in our Induction, whereby our inductees (typical group 30 - 45 people) are split into groups of c.6, and they're sent on a 'treasure hunt' in the area surrounding the office; be it submitting group videos / photos to convey a Vodafone value, or answering Vodafone trivia once they're at a specific landmark.

    We've found that it's a great energiser session at the start of day 2, and adds some variety to our format for the days!

    • I really like the element here of interacting with the technology early on in the induction. One of the ideas I had whilst at RBS was to use QR codes and get learners to download a QR code reader and go and find things out about the various places in the building as a treasure hunt and anyone who completed the treasure hunt the quickest was 'the winner'.

      There is a lot of scope for QR codes to support learning using mobile devices and they are quite easy to set up http://www.qrstuff.com/

  • Hi Amy, we don't use iPad's but we do use the Lenovo Yoga Thinkpad, http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/yoga-series/?iPromoID.... I introduced these (or similar) into our manufacturing training environment about 3 years ago for a few reasons;

    • We needed to enhance the training environment in and around manufacturing cells, this allows us to train "on the shop floor" in and around the working environment rather than taking employees away from the real working environment. This meant that the employees could read all SOP's and working instructions (WI's) while actually seeing the modules running.
    • We wanted to reduce our use of paper training materials and paper training records, we are a heavily regulated medical device manufacturer so we needed to be able to generate training records for every element of training for all 2000+ employees. Using the Yoga, gives us full access to all training material, all training records, all files and folders all in one place, we use the touchscreen to collect electronic signatures for every element of training. This saved us in excess of 250000 sheets of A4 paper in our first years.
    • We introduced videos to out training learning packs (a kind of haynes manual of training), using the Yoga we can now show these videos line side.
    • We revitalised other peoples conceptions of training, we become "With it" and "modern" and our employees became engaged, it was exciting for them as well as us.

    I would suggest that if you need access to Microsoft applications then there are better alternatives to the iPad, if you dont, then I would think the iPad would be your choice.

    I hope this is useful to you

    • This is great Darren, I think a big shift for L&D is to use mobile devices to enhance learning and not distract from it.

      How many times do we say - put mobiles away or turn them off. Instead of "get them out and let's use them to help us learn, share and collaborate." I'm not a fan of the term 'mobile learning' but as usual the suppliers have jumped on another way to 'sell us the sizzle' but I do believe when used productively mobile devices can help/enhance the learning experience.

      Some great examples here thanks for sharing!

    • That's really helpful Darren, thank you.

  • Hi Amy,

    Great post and questions.

    There was an interesting discussion on using Learning App's which links to this that you might find relevant / useful
