L&D In manufacturing

Happy Friday all!I am currently doing the Level 5 HRM course however I have an interview on Monday for a L&D/HR role within an automotive manufacturing company.

I would really welcome any ideas on the most important elements of an L&D role in manufacturing??!!

At present I provide HR and Training admin for a construction company which is mainly focused on health and safety courses, what other courses may be of relevance.Thank you!!

Molly

  • Hi Mike,

Didn't go too well but I knew all about the L&D side after the guidance Alison gave :) Will have to keep looking!

  • How did the interview go Molly?

  • Hi Molly,

I expect they use role specific standard operating procedures / work instructions and factory staff will need to be able to demonstrate competencies.

As well as the range of H&S they will probably also need Quality to be covered. ( deviations, quarantines and so on). I expect they will have a QMS.

Also CI - OAC, LEAN, Green belt etc - exactly what they will need will depend upon how developed they are.

Managers will require a whole set of other training so they can carry out their managerial role, both technical and HR type courses - policies, procedures, Leadership skills and so on.

Engineers will probably need OEM training (OEM - original equipment manufacturers) and possibly upskilling.
Factory staff, lab staff and office staff have very different development requirements. Bear in mind the factory will probably run shifts in order to operate 24 hours.

They may want their whole workforce to do site specific training such as Fire Awareness and Manual handling for example.
I expect you are familiar with the various permit to work courses, risk assessor , fork lift truck etc
Do you use " train the trainer" and " train the assessor"? They are quite common for rolling out "on the job" training in factories.

Good luck with your interview. I'm sure you'll do well.

If you want a chat over the weekend I'm happy to tell you about the challenges i face at work. I work in a drinks manufacturing company. Quite a lot of our shift managers have come from the automotive industry. If you had any specific queries i could see if I could ask them for you, if any of them are on shift over the weekend. I'm going in tomorrow.

    Alison :)
